692239 2008-07-26 00:18:00 Please help me on this one - although it just may be my extreme slow low spec pc.

I have a Dell Dimension XPS B800 (800 mHz, 128 rdram, vid ram 64mb, hdd 20gb with ext usb2 hdd 320gb, win2k pro) which is 8 YEARS old. I know the time has come... and it is unbelievably slow. Here are some times:

0:00 - Power button pressed
2:34 - Boot screen disappears and screen filled default desktop color - "Windows is Starting Up" dialog
3:14 - Windows automatically logs onto default user (ie the flash of the greyed out login box followed by "Loading Your Personal Settings")
3:34 - The login sound plays
4:04 - Desktop appears and startup items start to load
6:34 - Startup items complete loading

At a guestimate of 7 minutes, the computer is ready to use. In this state, it opens "My Computer" in 23 seconds.

Doing absolutely nothing (all normal sevices and backgroud things running) it uses 63% RAM and 3% CPU.
Outlook 2000 - 65% RAM, 5% CPU
IE6 - 67% RAM, 5% CPU

AV - Eset Nod32 v3.0
Firewall - Comodo Personal v2.4 (set to allow all because it causes problems, and is about to be upgraded to v3)

I'll now post some images of windows task manager so you can see what programs are running.

btw, PC is not connected to any network and connects to internet via modem dialup

Is there something wrong or is it just slow? (boot screen for 2 minutes??)

692240 2008-07-26 00:21:00 In my experience, Windows 2000 does take longer to start up than any other MS OS.

Try upgrading the RAM - at least 256MB - and see if that makes a difference.

Try removing the external HD.

What other stuff are you loading at Startup?

Is it Nod32 AV only or is it the Smart security version? If it's SS, then uninstall Comodo as 2 firewalls on 1 PC WILL conflict.

Also, post a HiJackThis log.

Will Windows 98 run on it? (ie are there drivers for it?) Might be a better choice than W2000.

edit: Just googled the PC and found it takes RDRAM... expensive stuff (ascent.co.nz) - Might be time for a new PC :)

What is the machine's service tag (so I can see if there are drivers for Windows 98)? This will be somewhere on the case or most likely in System Properties.

692241 2008-07-26 00:21:00 It will be sluggish, but it shouldn't be that slow! WIN2k does take a while to start up compared to some other OSs.

More RAM would help too, if you can actually find some. I had a look around here, and I can't see any.

I'd do hardware diagnostics. HDD and RAM.

Post a HJT log.

Edit - Beat me to it... :p

692242 2008-07-26 00:24:00 I dont think it's compatible with 2000.

According to the Comodo site:

CFP 3.0 System Requirements

* Windows XP (SP2) 32 bit version
* Windows XP 64 bit version
* Windows Vista 32 and 64 bit versions
* 64 Mb RAM
* 55 MB hard disk space for 32-bit versions and 75 MB for 64-bit versions

So, you'll have to update Windows, if you want to install V3.

692243 2008-07-26 00:37:00 At the momen't I don't want to go for the major upgrades (ie physical ram upgrades...) but I will certainly think about it.
I realise that win2k takes longer but yes, it shoudl't take THAT long.

I'm now trying to upload images of running processes and performance graphs to photobucket but its gonna take too long so I'll just post here:
edit- cheers for the info on comodo, no wonder the installer woudln't start...

just started a list but realise HJT will tell you.
