692138 2008-07-25 20:47:00 I want to make a longer ide cable by plugging two shorter ones into a 'joiner'. Is such a device available? worl (8599)
692139 2008-07-25 20:52:00 Probably not.

Why not just buy a longer cable?

How big are you after?

IDE/PATA cables can't be all that long due to signal lose, something like 18" 45.7cm is the recommended maximum.

692140 2008-07-25 20:52:00 I doubt it. Altho if there were, it'd probably create lots of errors.

To whatever it was connected to

692141 2008-07-25 21:04:00 I've seen an IDE extension somewhere...

Something like this (www.stonewallcable.com)?

Perhaps to avoid the length limitation you could convert IDE to SATA and then back to IDE.

Yes thats the sort of thing, thank you. Wasn't expecting such a price though.

692143 2008-07-27 03:12:00 I'd just make a cable the right length.

The (female) IDC connectors (CNHF40) cost $0.73 +GST each, and the cable's about 5/m (CARG40) at South Island Components (sicom.co.nz). You need a vice and a bit of care to clamp the IDC connectors together. (You can get the male connector too, if you really want an "extension ",but at $5.72 why bother?

692144 2008-07-27 21:35:00 You might notice some speed degridation if the cable is too long or other errors. The max recommended length (from the dim dark days of 40wire cables) is 18inches. autechre (266)
