437994 2006-03-14 08:17:00 Suddently out of the blue it's making a huge noise, like a loud metal hitting sound, does that mean I need to replace it? Or is it fixable?

If i do need a new one, is the more expensive ones better than the cheaper one or they're about the same? As they have a huge price range difference like $175 - $600+

Is more HP the better?

Sorry for asking so many questions :help:

437995 2006-03-14 08:19:00 Have you looked inside for spoons etc? Jen (38)

yes I have looked, I even went under the sink and pull it out and had a good look and there is nothing inside, I rotate the metal blade and it can be freely rotate.

437997 2006-03-14 08:47:00 If you are sure there is no foreign body inside the unit, then the most likely sources of noise are either loose blades, or failed bearings. Either way, inspection should reveal one or the other. Terry Porritt (14)
437998 2006-03-14 09:16:00 Just had ours repaired, Seems the entire failure was caused by a 5 cent piece lodging under the impeller.

Wish I had made the effort to fix it myself.....

437999 2006-03-14 09:35:00 Our Insinkerator died at Christmas after 15 years sterling service - it ate one glass too many . :D Mind you I only found that out once I'd struggled for hours detaching the damned thing .

In hindsight it was fixable - in fact I achieved this - but unfortunately the flange which attached it to the sink decided to crumble once it was detached . No flange = no connection = kaput . I did it hard putting a going-concern in the bin . :annoyed:

Mitre 10 on a Sunday - 6 units to pick from ranging in price as you say from $200 - 700 . What to do . Ultimately I chose the second best Insinkerator on the basis that the old one was great and quality is worth paying for .

One good part of the whole knuckle-bashing episode was that I discovered Insinkerator had flash instructions on-line . It was quite a puzzle to sort out - ingenious really, and I'd probably have given up and called a plumber if I hadn't found the site .

438000 2006-03-14 13:37:00 I've never owned a waste disposal unit - or even considered buying one.
I have a compost heap, a recycle bin & a bag for what we used to call the dustmen.
So I'm intrigued. What do you owners put in these gizmos?
All I have problems disposing of are chicken bones and rotten meat.

Can't see the point junking up the local sewerage system with waste that is easily composted.

438002 2006-03-14 19:36:00 COULDN'T see the sense in paying $500 for one to replace our old one so I got the $200 job .....works well indeed better than the old one drcspy (146)
438003 2006-03-14 19:37:00 Wellington's sewage system separates all the sludge and sends it to Living Earth for composting. PaulD (232)
