438441 2006-03-19 23:22:00 Problem is, how does each individual driver get to know his/her limits when they are not permitted to lose traction? New laws make it illegal to spin one's wheels - indeed this can result in confiscation of the car.

Not so much new law as enforcement of existing law. If Mr Plod judges that your wheel spin is a "deliberate" act rather than caused by a hill start or slippery surface, then he'll issue a ticket for loss of control of the vehicle. If it is serious enough he'll charge you with "careless use" which means your licence is at risk.

You always have the right to defend such charges.

438442 2006-03-19 23:25:00 Not every new driver can afford to hire a race track for the day, neither do they all have access to a farm where they can get loose and learn what happens . I'm stunned at the lack of driving skills . If a person is told that a certain type of vehicle is "safer" often enough, they'll believe it until they crash .

Well said . I think that all new drivers should be made to spend at least a couple of hours driving around cones in a paddock, with a small hillside thrown in .

438443 2006-03-19 23:31:00 i'd say no to deisel cars......seen enuf of them spewing out black smoke.....imagine if all cars were deisel......the pollution would be pretty bad. drcspy (146)
438444 2006-03-20 01:37:00 Yeh . I've seen them too . They need a tune up . None of our diesel cars smoke and I'd be embarrassed if they did . A well tuned diesel doesn't smoke but you can't MAKE people tune them - yet .

Great idea Winston001! I wonder who'd offer their farm tho' . . . . . . lol

Thank you to those who clarified the wheelspin issue .

Going out now in my comfortable and non-smoking diesel car .

Happy days to all

438445 2006-03-20 06:29:00 If you've got a diesel car, you can carry a can of diesel. You'll always have a way to prepare the road surface to test your car's stability in a spin.  Graham L (2)

afaik a new law came in a little while ago. its now illeagal to have a vechile that smokes (any kind of smoke excluding steam) and you can be fined for it and have to get it repaired and/or show you are trying to get it repaired.

438447 2006-04-24 00:27:00 Hey tweake, as you seem to know what you're talking about. I'm looking at a 92 nissan safari at the moment, done just over 190ks. Should i in all truth add a couple of grand to the price they're asking to allow for getting seals etc done? James 34 (9996)

YES!

any older deisel i would allow a grand to do the seals and another grand or 2 if the pump needs an overhaul . not sure of NZ prices to reco pumps but talking to a few assuies latly, they are are paying $3-4k to reco some pumps .
talk to a mechcanic first ! ! at that milage you may also be up for injector reco to . check for ANY smoke .

Can you point us to the "new law"?? trying to find it at the mo . it was buried on the poice or ltsa site . basicly it came in with the much published "indicate at rounabouts" . there where about 4-5 new rules that came in at that time . funy how they never seam to advertise them :(
