2006-03-18 21:05:00 | As for me - I just like to drive over inconvenient curbs and its amazing where you can park if you are keen enough. :DHa ha ... I do the same in my truck :D Damn curbs.. Who put them there anyway? :p | personthingy (1670) | |

2006-03-18 22:08:00 | I've run out of fingers trying to count the amount of people i've met who own huge unstable jeep like 4 wheel drives and only use them in our (CHCH) already congested non-rural roads. I wonder how much of AKs traffic woes would disappear if this sort of vehicle was banned from AKs non-rural streets? ;) Yes there are plenty of people here that own them but don't use them offroad, and they are missing out on the best part of a 4WD. If you are driving a 4WD to the point it becomes unstable then you are being an idiot and shouldn't be driving a car either. I need to use 4WD at least once or twice every month for work and I also need to go into town for parts, drop off my daughter at preschool and get groceries etc. I don't think I need two vehicles, that just increases my vehicle costs. So banning 4WD's from non-rural roads would be a silly idea from my point of view.

2006-03-18 23:23:00 | I was given my first diesel. It was a 1976 Datsun 220D and started life in NZ as Datsun NZ's courtesy car. It then had a long life as a taxi where it was maintained well. This little car took me all over the country (to work) very economically and the speedo read 986,000 miles in 2002 when rust stopped it getting WOFs. I just loved that little car. Next came a 1990 Nissan Laurel 2.8L which appeared to be in pristine condition with low miles. This we bought for $3,000.00 but the motor soon died (mechanics call them "soft motors") costing almost another $3,000.00 for a replant. Then the trans died - another almost $2,000.00. Guess we should've checked it out more carefully but since all the work, it's a rocket (for a diesel) and very reliable. We also have a 2.5L 1991 Mitubishi Delica van we use for work. It's amazing. Bullet proof and quite fast. Heaps of miles and still going well. Gets thrashed a bit by other workers but handles the abuse well. Please don't buy yet another 4WD to drive in the middle of the road. It seems that all 4WD users prefer to drive on the centre line. WTA? Whatever you buy, check it out thoroughly before parting with $$. Good luck with your choice. I learned a lot from your posts SurferJoe, thank you! Keep that soap box handy!

Hmmm . . . . $8000 for the privilege of driving a 1990 Laurel? You would have been better off to repower the remains with a 2nd hand donk and flog it off, that way you might have recovered $500+ (net) of your original investment . $500 +$5000 saved on repairs = $5500 to spend on a decent vehicle . Sigh . . . . when people fall in love with cars, or stubborn pride takes over, commonsense flies out the window . Cheers Billy 8-{) |

2006-03-19 02:45:00 | Do you think it's love? We spent 2k on auto tranmission of a Honda Prelude and sold it for $1500,stupidity I think entered here. If I could have what I have lost on cars I would be laughing.

2006-03-19 04:12:00 | I have the same curse, I spent 3 grand fixing a 2 grand motorcycle, Its still a pile of crap, and not worth selling...If I had spent the total 5 grand on a better bike I would have been much better off. Currently the bike has no rego or warrent and will probally end up at the wreckers. Every freakin time I go near a car, truck or motorcycle....

2006-03-19 04:31:00 | It's a love/hate relationship really . We like the comfort but hated having to spend so many $$ . Don't think for a minute we didn't agonise over the decision BillyT . We are quite sensible usually and most of the cars we've owned have given little or no trouble and are repaired at home . There were no functioning, used Laurel motors in the country when we needed one or we'd have done as you suggested . Problem is, DH is a small giant with DVT (deep vein thrombosis) and after trying out hundreds of cars the Laurel gave him more room than anything else we tried and we tried Jags, Mercedes, Fords, Euros and Jappas . If you know of a car with more interior room for small giants without going to petrol-hungry US batmobiles, please let us know! tweak'e: ROFL! So THAT'S what it's about . Ahhhh . :D Did you see the Tv show which showed 4WDs fall over more often than other vehicles? I guess they have lots of head-ons too . . . . . I prefer driving on the left -this leaves room to escape . Rather a ditch than an oncoming car or truck . Anyway, the roads are virually unused on the left - no bumps and smooth sailing . IMHO it's failure to keep left that causes crashes, not speed . re the Mitzi: we bought it from a car dealer friend who knew the previous owner had loved it and completed all servicing and we regularly change oil, filters and generally look after it . We'd heard they were renowned for blowing up but have been lucky so far (touching wood) . I guess every now and then there's a good one produced and this time, we were lucky as it's now high miles but still going strong . Happy Days to y'all
