438401 2006-03-16 07:53:00 Ignoring all the uh...indepth info.

You don't want an old wornout diesel, no matter what the price.

And thats about all I have to say....Though I laugh at people getting upset because people buy a style of car they don't agree with. Thats just weird, should you be cnsulted before one gets dressed as well?, This shirt to your taste?,how about these shoes?

Lmfao. As if someone driving a 4WD has any effect on your day, life, food intake, lungs.....Thats just small minded.

438402 2006-03-16 08:02:00 I agree with Joe although I'm no expert. From what I've read diesel vehicles are actually less environmentally harmful than petrol. This is accepted by some environmentalists just as they are now (suprisingly) coming to the view that nuclear power is the least harmful option.

So far as SUV drivers go, I concede there are some arrogant prats. However if you want a solid safe (leaving aside idiots who manage roll-over) roomy vehicle then the SUV is an excellent choice. Also the visibility from inside is wonderful. I know of people whose carsick children no longer experienced sickness when the family got a 4wd.

As for me - I just like to drive over inconvenient curbs and its amazing where you can park if you are keen enough. :D

438403 2006-03-16 08:52:00 Thank you Winston. Agree on those points. I love my little Nissan. I should have looked you up on my recent visit to Bluff. Scouse (83)
438404 2006-03-16 10:35:00 Damn! I just love it when somebody comes up for air and tries to espouse flamefront propagation and stoichemetric values with me . . . let's go at it!gloves on

Modern engines, gasoline, have wonderful little things called oxygen sensors that are really part of a series of devices that are designed to maintain a 13 . 7:1 air-fuel ratio (AFR) no matter what the rpm, load or air temperature or airflow . bloocks! that hasn't been true for the last 30 years . every modern car runs the petrol mix far leaner at idle than at full power . exspecially the direct injected lean burn motors .

. (Macks and Detroit Squeezers are notorious for this), and if left in gear and accidently bumped, can fire backwards yep uncles 2 stoke supercharged and turbod deisel detroit used to do it a few time . stall it and let it run backwoulds and the motor would fire back up .

diesels DO NOT control or modulate the intake of air . . OK, an exception to the rule is the Mercedes Benz diesels . . they use a butterfly in the intake of the plenum . . . but this is just a noise abatement device . and just about every turbo deisel made includeing the surf mentioed before . comman fix is to disable it . however new ones have computer controlled variable (stepper motor) butterfly, this is mostly for emmisions purposes

Now, your "lean" idle condition would be correct if we are only talking about a gasoline engine . . which is what i was talking about

short ver, petrols run hot at idle, lean burning and limited air flow . deisels run hottest at max fuel input (ie full throttle) . at idle there is very little fuel and large amounts of air . that large amount of air (engines are just air pumps) helps keep the motor and exaust temps down . the exaust temp at idle will always be colder on a deisel than a petrol .

438406 2006-03-16 19:32:00 Toyota Hilux Surf 2.4l turbo diesel.Lovely vehicle to drive, especially on the beach. But I wouldn't want one to drive around town - bugger all power to zip around, eg trying to get into a line of traffic. It goes like a slug. Greg (193)
438407 2006-03-16 19:58:00 What have I started? :D :)

Thanks for the info guys (and keep it coming ;)) Don't know if its made it any easier to make a decision, but now I have a lot more info (almost put "understanding" in there, but that definitely wouldn't fit)...

We thinks we might turn down the offer at this stage. As much as we would like it, it'll be wifey who does most of the driving, lifting the 3 kids in and out all day, two pushchairs (one a big double-stroller), groceries, all the shopping she does wasting all my hard-earned cash... Hmmm... maybe it might deter that :D

You mean you didn't expect all that?

You're pretty naive then . :D

In that case if the rear of it is like one of these ( . trademe . co . nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Cars/Toyota/photos/a-50038649/p-18623565 . htm" target="_blank">www . trademe . co . nz) then it would be a huge mistake . That flap at the back that drops down is a huge pain in the back, literally, when it comes to loading and unloading things and can be a real back buster . Definitely not good when coupled with the height of it for lifting heavy prams and baby gear in and out even though there is heaps of room in the back for such things compared to other vehicles . A station wagon car is far more back friendly .

438409 2006-03-16 21:24:00 is like one of these (www.trademe.co.nz)
actually thats not a bad buy provided the motor goes ok. the 2.8 is more reliable than the 2.4 turbo.

...and inconvenient small cars :D

However if you want a solid safe
solid - some models, yes
safe - I'm no so sure (battering ram comes to mind :D )

I reckon you should just buy a Toyota Echo
