The problem with physical punishment is that it is negative and limited. You can only hit a child so many times before it becomes normal and ineffective. So you have to hit harder and more often. However you'll have a child with a growing anger problem and who might just hate you.

It isn't easy to resist smacking. But I've found that dealing with bad behaviour calmly (yeah right!) at an early stage and withdrawing privileges is very effective. Also rewarding good behaviour with a treat works wonders.

I'm against smacking and support a change to the law because some parents genuinely believe that bashing their kids with electric cords, rolls of wallpaper, and fence pickets is ok.

438108 2006-03-16 00:54:00 You can't just base her committing suicide because of the text messages.

Even I still have no idea what people can do to prevent bullying, they all say go and talk to them, but why not explain what steps they'd take to prevent it and show how it actually prevents it. Telling their parents definitely is not enough.

So how can they prevent bullying?

Cheers,

KK

Actually the news reports say the texting was part of the reason this poor girl took her life - not the sole reason.

As for stopping bullying - very difficult. After all it happens between adults too and in plenty of work-places. There are programs in schools and one I saw enlisted the help of the bully to protect the victim. The bully didn't realise everyone knew what they were doing, so there was no loss of face. However he did take on the responsibility and became much better behaved.

What a wonderful idea Winston . Could you post here or PM me with any kind of information that could lead me to that program? I am involved in similar management issues through a BoT and although I have no need of it right now, but I am sure it would provided helpful advice in related areas .

I would be particularly interested in how it was possible for the victim to relate to the bully as a "friend and protector", and what techniques the program used to facilitate the attitude change in both victim and aggressor . Obviously both parties had to agree to try or it would never have got off the ground .

Cheers

438110 2006-03-16 02:16:00 From my experience of school bullies, I'd say there's as much chance of spotting a flying pig heading off to deliver a snowflake to hell as there is of a such a program actually working. You know sometimes, bullies aren't just misunderstood kids expressing their frustrations in an unhealthy manner. They're bullies - obnoxious pricks who get their kicks out of humilating, dominatiing and being violent towards the vulnerable. Most probably grow up to be wife beaters. Colour me cynical on this one. Biggles (121)

438113 2006-03-16 04:43:00 On a different tack, but similar in a way to Winston relating the appointment of the bully to victim protector, was the Joseph Lucas policy of promoting shop-floor trouble makers and "lawyers" to foremen.
That way the troublemakers and reds became part of management and their outlook on life dramatically changed.

You seem a bit confused. You say you are against smacking and then talk about bashing kids with electric cords which has nothing to do with smacking.
The biggest thing is, disciplin needs to start at an early age and be consistant from both parents. Some parents don't worry about disciplin until it is too late.

Just about all bullies are also cowards when they don't have the support of their mates.
