439529 2006-03-21 06:55:00 It may be easier to sell the car and buy a bicycle....... andrew93 (249)
439530 2006-03-21 06:58:00 Go live in a small town where you can walk from one side of the town to the other in 1 hour. Saves a lot of petrol when you have time (and the weather isn't too bad) Greven (91)
439531 2006-03-21 07:15:00 Most of the big bp's in Christchurch have diesel on each pump. I worked at a bp years ago, it was there policy from 7am to 10pm there is to be forecourt staff to assist.
I even get them to check the oil and top up the window washer, get my monies worth.
lucky having more than one deisel pump.

tho i tell the staff to "F off" (politely of course) if they suggest cheaking the oil as most don't know what a dipstick is if you shoved it.....;). also checking oil at a gas station is actually a big no-no as it always reads low and over filling it with oil is not good. not to mention the ones where i've seen oil put in the brake container and engine oil in the tranmision :(

I'm not sure that is a good analogy. If I go to the shop I don't pay the proprietor before selecting what I want to buy. I select what I want, pay for it and leave. well if they had gates on the entrance it might be different. on big stores you have to go through the check out to get out of the store.

439532 2006-03-21 07:18:00 The price of oil at service stations is a "bit" exorbitant, too. ;) It's nearly as bad a rip off as the water they sell in little bottles. Graham L (2)

You asked if anyone has an attendant fill the tank for them nowadays.
Yes, I do.
Sure, males fill tanks when I'm a passenger. But when I'm driving, I just wait for an attendant to do it.
And in this part of the world, they still do it with good grace.
We have hardly any prepay pumps; fuel theft's not a biggie here. They are self-service - but it's not compulsory.

Admittedly, the service stations I use (in Dunedin & Alexandra - plus any on the route between) aren't usually frantically busy, as I don't pick rush hours. But I've always believed I was paying for "service," in my petrol price - although I admit that owners' margins are slimmer now than when I started driving.
I do have a fuel card & I know how to use it at a truck stop if I need to, so I'm not really a helpless female.
But I've got by without ever handling a grubby petrol pump nozzle so far, and I won't change that unless I have to.

(Yes, I know I couldn't get away with it up north. My Auckland sister says she's disgusted with me, but I know she's just jealous...)

439534 2006-03-21 21:27:00 Most of the gas stations that I pass in south Auckland don't have any Eftpos at the pumps and be dambed if I'll leave a CC with the attendent while I fill up. When I have use Efpost and then drive away I always wonder will the cops make a visit as some pump jockey may see you drive away and assume that you didn't pay and if the Eftpos machine does not give a reciept how do you prove that you did pay.. Anyone who goes 24/7 prepay will get bycotted I'm afraid.. Had anough of the prepay crap when I worked in the US.. paulw (1826)
439535 2006-03-21 23:55:00 laura......i'm jealous, i wonder if i should move to the south island :D tweak'e (69)

You don't want to break your nails or anything like that, now do you.

I prefer to do it myself and then you don't get any "splillage".
