692225 2008-07-26 04:04:00 Think thats the same HP laptop I have, looks like the same specs, worth it perhaps if your going to ditch Vista, Otherwise its a dog.

Mine has been relegated to surfing duties, haven't seen it for awhile to be honest, Its slower then the Asus it replaced which was quite a few years old.

Most of the issue is the layer upon layer upon layer of HP bloat loaded on top of the standard MS bloat.

I'm thinking of buying a copy of Vista just so I can do a clean install without all the crap that they infest it with.

Horrible horrible laptop.

692226 2008-07-26 04:05:00 No one has screamed the HP's are hopeless, so I guess that is a good sign. :p

Sorted, Though your post wasn't here when I started.

692227 2008-07-26 04:06:00 Horrible horrible laptop. So the HP software infestation is the problem, otherwise OK?

Can you get rid of the bulk of it without too much of a mess, or does it really need a clean install with a bog standard OS disk?

692228 2008-07-26 04:23:00 Is battery life a concern for you Jen? If so, you might want to investigate what the battery capacity of the HP is. somebody (208)
692229 2008-07-26 04:27:00 We've started getting a few HP lappies at work as they're still readily down(up!!)gradeable to XP Pro, and while they're nice, I think the Asus machines are still better . . . . quicker, designed to a higher standard etc

Asus FTW

That's what I did with my laptop - as soon as I got it, I found someone who had a plain Vista disc, then used my product key to reinstall Vista.

I backed up the drivers from the laptop to save downloading them again using a great little program called Drivermax (http://drivermax.com).

It really needs a clean install, The only reason I haven't is because I invested so much time sorting out this install. Its now 100 stable and far faster then how it was delivered.

She was just so unbelievably chocka full of HP crap, and not a single shred of it had a worthwhile reason to be on the PC.

Plus if I remember rightly had nortons and MS office (30 day trial) installed, I bet assigning Outlook as the default email client but with a 30 day limit tripped up just about every customer they have. Crap like that just gets up my nose.

After removing all the services, startup items, installed crap, I ran a reg-cleaner and trhe results were in the thousands, Never seen anything like it. Then I found a number of items so intergrated into the OS I had to remove em by brute force, and again, thousands of reduntant entries in the reg.

Then I found a folder of about 6Gb that the HP software generates, Madness, DELTE DELETE DELETE. There is still remantes of the crap in the nooks and crannies.

When the system needs an OS install I'll never use the recovery CD's, which I might add you need to create yourself.

I am happy that my own experience has justified the Anti-HP rantings I have been doing for the last decade....But I wish I had bought another Asus.

That aside, hardware wise shes a very nice unit, Love the keyboard, Audio is almost alright, screen isn't the best....

That was my plan, Though I don't know anyone with a copy of Vista, and wasn't sure my key would work.

692233 2008-07-26 07:29:00 Okay . So it looks like nVidia G84/G86 mobile series cards have a wee issue and come unglued when hot . :xmouth:

One of a few articles found ( . com/news . ars/post/20080716-nvidia-denies-rumors-of-mass-gpu-failures . html" target="_blank">arstechnica . com)

Something a bit more official ( . sec . gov/Archives/edgar/data/1045810/000119312508145974/d8k . htm" target="_blank">www . sec . gov)

So . . . maybe I ought to be looking at lappies with ATi cards now?
