err . . i think the idea is they are going to do the night time prepay system all day ie 24/7 .

as far as eftpos goes it will only spend what you have in your account . it just tells me "limits apply" you don't have to entre an amount, just hit "fill" .
great WHEN it works .

one other gas station runs unattended, card only . no idea what happens if there is a fuel spill .

BTW does anyone here actually waits for the attendants to pump gas for you ? does that exist these days?

439520 2006-03-21 04:01:00 BTW does anyone here actually waits for the attendants to pump gas for you ? does that exist these days?If I'm in smart dress I would only go to a big bp, I just pop the flap, normally there is at least one forecourt staff, if noone comes to serve me I just walk into the shop and ask. 439521 2006-03-21 04:02:00 If I drive in and the pumps are on prepay then I drive straight out and go down the road to the next station. 1st one loses the sale. There are other options open to them besides prepay pumps. Just that it is the easiest & cheapest option. They don't give a stuff about the customer inconvenience.
Hear hear!

However, I find if you wave at the attendant and indicate you are paying by credit card then they will unlock the pump. I have used this technique up and down the country and it usually works for me. I'm sick of the conversations "Prepay please", "Ok, fill er up thanks", "How much?", "I dunno, I want to fill er up", "So how much do you want?" - yes I read your post Lizard but IMO prepay is assuming we are all criminals. For 99% of the population this should be taken as an insult to our integrity. If the head office & site management weren't so tight about hiring staff and paying a livable wage, then maybe there wouldn't be half the issues they currently face. But I also recognise that some operators are working off paper thin margins (much like IT resellers) so if the oil companies weren't so greedy then the site managers would have more funds to put back into a) staff and b) customer service. Wearing my cyncial hat I wonder 'Who is the real criminal?'

i often its quicker for me to help fill the persons car up than the time it takes for them to find any forecourt staff, so i can get filled up rather than wait forever for someone else to filled up.
8 pumps and only one has deisel so you can guess which one has a waiting line.

but IMO prepay is assuming we are all criminals. For 99% of the population this should be taken as an insult to our integrity true but i also hate having to pay more because others steal products. i don't see anyone complaining about the shops who police their stores etc to stop shop lifting but they certainly seem to complain about gas stations doing it....mmmmmmm.....i wonder why ;)

439524 2006-03-21 04:36:00 8 pumps and only one has deisel so you can guess which one has a waiting line. Most of the big bp's in Christchurch have diesel on each pump. I worked at a bp years ago, it was there policy from 7am to 10pm there is to be forecourt staff to assist.
I even get them to check the oil and top up the window washer, get my monies worth.

439525 2006-03-21 04:47:00 Yesterday I used a fully automated Gull petrol station for the first time, I really liked it.

It demanded my eftpos card, and pin before I started. I then filled my car up, and re-swiped my eftpos card for the receipt.

Fast, efficient, and I didn't have to guess the volume. That is how petrol stations *should* run.

I'm not sure that is a good analogy. If I go to the shop I don't pay the proprietor before selecting what I want to buy. I select what I want, pay for it and leave. But I take your point......although, if I were the Devil's advocate, why should gas stations be any different to other retailers?

Talk to a petrol station owner or manager Andrew, non payers are the bane of their existence and very few get caught . False number plates are the go, and of course you can get as many sets of plates as you like . All you need is a screwdriver .

The only ones who get caught are the naive or the stupid who do it on their own turf and don't use false plates . AFAIK you can't fill your car with gas in the US without swiping your card, prepaying cash, or selling your body in the back room .

Perhaps Surfer Joe can update us on the state of the play in the land of the free .

Cheers
