| 438087 | 2006-03-14 21:53:00 | Why does any school kid NEED a cell phone? Thats a very good point you have there JJJJJ, the only thing I can think of for why a kid would need a cell phone is to contact there parents to ask if they can go over to a friends place to play or something like that . & if the kid wants to ring they parents then why cant they use a payphone?? Ban them in schools for a start, cell phones are not necessary and are an absolute pain for teachers . I agree with you there sue . :2cents: |

Oh, lets read it then..... OH NOES! how offending! Oh, I feel so put down now :( Beep beep, ooh, another one from him, lets read it... Oh good another abusive txt from that guy. Now that he's established himself as an abuser lets ring Telecom or Vodafone and get his phone account cancelled. Both phone companies will cancel accounts for people that don't respond to warnings. |

Bullying is the problem, not the cellphone, if someone felt like picking on another person to the point of driving them to suicide they would have done it if that person had a cellphone or not . It really seems like a "lets blame <insert here>* for an existing problem . All too often that is not addressing the real source of the problem . It seems to happen all too often as people prefer to blame something new for a problem, rather than the real cause . -Qyiet *feel free to replace <insert here> with any of the following: Rock n Roll, Death Metal, Rap, Violence on TV, Violence in Computer Games, The Internet, Terrorists, Music/Movie Piracy and the French . edit:bullies spending money to bully people, and leaving written evidence of bullying are just *stupid* . |

And as per the other thread on this subject, I'm totally for children having cellphones. They just need a bit of education about giving out their numbers, and general use. |

I'm not to clued up on how cell phones work but maybe someone could make a program that you can use on your cell phone that blacklists numbers or something like that. |

| 438093 | 2006-03-15 00:40:00 | think I read somewhere about a very limited type of new phone you can get for the kids which will only dial about four numbers and was extremely limited in who it can receive messages/calls from These phones are very popular in Japan but for some reason haven't been released here. Presumably either controlled by software in the phone or at the service provider end. I heartly agree that telecos should be able to enable a web based blacklist system for all phones. |

Bullying is the problem, not the cellphone, if someone felt like picking on another person to the point of driving them to suicide they would have done it if that person had a cellphone or not . Not nescessarily . Texting represents a leap in communication technology . Previously a threat or nasty comment could be said but now it is written . The written word has more power than speech because it is in a much more permanent form . It can be copied to others who join in . The bullying often takes the form of malicious gossip which is sent from person to person and can be reviewed and repeated at will . Say something enough times and people believe it . Kids can be very nasty . Girls are especially good with words . So I think this is a serious issue without any easy solution . The current acknowedgement of bullying behaviour is at least a step towards controlling it . :2cents: |

| 438095 | 2006-03-15 01:19:00 | Fundamentally it is a parenting issue on both sides of the problem, but it is the students who share their phone numbers and once they do that, they spread like a virus . One major problem is that kids are incapable of seeing that their best friend is sometimes their worst enemy, especially in mismatched friendships with disparate intellect/financial status/appearance etc between the parties . Best or "trusted" friends are probably responsible for most of the revealing of phone numbers . I know service providers can change the number on a phone, but can they allocate a new number to an existing phone? Failing that I'd opt for a $99 prepay and lock it down so that the number can't be spread around . After all, the main reason touted for needing phones at school is to call home, whereas the true reason is to be one of the crowd and wander round texting half the day (and night) . It is also possible to lock out incoming numbers (my prepay Nokia 2280 can lock out up to 15 incoming numbers and that should be enough to stop most attacks Receipt of bullies' texts is the easiest of attacks to manage if parents care enough to try, can remember the distinction between parent and child, and stand firm .
