2006-03-26 02:26:00 | Hi fellow F1ers, Is linux still a threat to Microsoft, or has Linux just been all hype? I remember a few years ago, Linux used to be all the rage and everyone was talking about how it would be the end of Microsoft. This does not seem to be the case, or have I been missing some news? Will the same thing happen with Firefox and Internet Explorer?

2006-03-28 06:53:00 | Haven't you heard; Microsoft has purchased Linux and is stopping support from tomorrow :D You should have waited a few days for April fools don't you think? What I meant was, a few years ago, there was geniune (spelling?) concern (for microsoft) that Linux would kill off Microsoft and become the dominant operating system. As far as I am concerned, Windows is still superior and Linux hasn't made a dent, except in servers and workstations perhaps. And Graham, I am not asking for a debate. I just wanna know the 'facts'

2006-03-28 10:03:00 | Personally I don't think Linux ever was a real threat to MS, and I don't think it ever will be. It's a backyard tinkerers too and has a different market to Windows. Even OS X poses a bigger threat than Linux, and that's only minor. Not wanting a war - just my personal thought on the matter.

Apart from gamers toys, what other part of the market is there? Mind you, Linux is still only a small percentage of users on the desktop/workstation.. |

2006-03-28 10:49:00 | The biggest threat to to Microsoft is Microsoft themselves, Linux has shot itself in the foot so often that in its current state its getting no software suport so remains a non-issue, Apple could be rightly positioned to gain a larger market share in the event that Vista doesn't "wow" Windows users when they next upgrade their comps, though many users would perhaps be put off by the elitist attitude of Apple marketing and theor fanboys. I think its a given that within a few years MS will cease to dominate the PC scene, They have held that position for a fair amount of time now to the detriment of everybody apart from their bank accounts and the creators of Spyware. Computing in all formats is still in its infancy, It won't ever go away, MS will though.
