440876 2006-03-27 00:54:00 I've been mulling over your post for the past half an hour. I have spent about twenty years down there and I've been thinking ,what would I like to see again?
Firstly I would pass through the bigger towns and cities as fast as possable.None of them are that much different to North Island towns.
I would suggest driving from Picton to Motueka. A day trip up Farewell Spit is quite interesting. Then a liesurely drive down the West Coast. The glaciers are worth a look, though you'll have to battle your way through millions of tourists. Through the Haast Pass and on to Bluff.
A day trip (by air) to Stewart Island. Then up through the centre of the Island. Queenstown is not worth a visit any more. Too expensive and everything is at "tourist" prices. Ditto Shanty Town.
Cromwell and Alexandria are worth a look. Then ,my favourite drive, through Dansey's Pass and on to Benmore.
Then to Christchurch. If you have time a drive out to Akaroa is quite pleasant.
Then up the East coast. A stop at Kaikoura . Join the tourists and have a look at the whales.(It you haven't seen whales before.)
For acomodation(?). I hate camping grounds. Unless you prefer them I would suggest country Hotels. They are not much more expensive and you don't have the hassle of looking for meals etc.

Whatever you decide I wish you a pleasant holiday.

440877 2006-03-27 01:04:00 Some place different ...

When you hit westport, go North up Karamea. There are some great caves to see, walking with a torch, the day walk into to the bottom of the Heaphy track, up the coast is really nice, and the Last Resort, was a nice place to stay.

440878 2006-03-27 03:48:00 Hi there – check into a good motel in Arrowtown – great base to tour central wineries – neat tastings and food – Queenstown 20 minutes away – do the Skyline. Arrowtown – autumn colours now out – Joes Garage a must (NZ’s top coffee café), New Orleans hotel – best country pub – try the Blue Door bar (never know who is going to be there) – Pesto, Automatic – good value restaurants and again in NZ’s top five restaurants – Safron and Postmasters – also great little English pub The Tap. Autumn Festival last week April – www.arrowtown.com. Enjoy!
BTW - lets know if ya need any more info!

440879 2006-03-27 04:34:00 There are some great walking tracks around Arrowtown. They will be looking good this time of year Greven (91)
440880 2006-03-27 04:46:00 Good point - should have mentioned those and now there is a great new track round part of Lake Hays - call into the little cafe - Walnut Cottage or Amisfield Winery (NZ's best winery cafe 2006). Sawpit Gully and the Arrow river walk. Also the Lakes District Museum is well worth a visit - a certain well known local a bit involved in the jewelry trade - his wife and another lady have a neat exhibition of local paintings - just opened. Also call into Millbrook and have a look round - tell the old B at the gate that I sent you! stuffed (1469)
440881 2006-03-27 05:22:00 Aha. So we have another Central Otagoite here.

Sorry, stuffed.
I didn't notice that Arrowtown in your I/D before.

Just don't give drcspy so much fleshpot info about your patch that he forgets the Alexandra/Clyde area's spectacular schist rock formations, the Maniototo plains, the Central Otago Rail Trail & art deco Ranfurly etc.

(I'll bet the Autumn leaves are starting to turn colour now? I should get back to my own patch soon for a look...)

440882 2006-03-27 05:41:00 Yeah they are not too bad – be sobbing in me beer at the Oak (sorry Tap/New Orleans/Blue Door) at all these bleeding visitors stuffing up our nice quiet backwater – ah well can’t keep a good thing to ourselves for too long – there are even some Jaffas that have snuck into town already! BTW – Pete at Postmasters has a new bar – tried it out Fri night – might have to get a job though to pay the bill….. stuffed (1469)
440883 2006-03-27 06:52:00 lol thanks all you guys

awsome.....well the first day we travel is thursday to wellington.....then friday picton/nelson saturday visit my son in tapawera, (he's farming) then sunday heading down the coast

if you got any more suggestions keep em comin.....yep well as for 'tourist prices' at shantytown etc well i guess we'll just have to put up with it .....i'ts only a oncer so it wont kill us lol gonna cost a fair bit anyway... petrol/accomodation/food etc etc a couple of expensive touristy things like a nice helicopter flight over franzjoseph (i've done that twice but the missus hasn't seen it ever), and a nice boat trip to the fijords could eat a few dollars......is it really worth the trip to stewart island ? what's there except for native wildlife, (the locals) and some animals/birds etc ?

440884 2006-03-27 08:43:00 A 'must' for spectacular, magnificent, untouched scenery is the drive from Ashburton - inland, to Erewhon via Lake Clearwater and Lake Camp in the middle of the Southern Alps.
The drive 'around the bays' and a walk along the waterfront to Oriental Bay is rewarding while in Wellington.

I've been pondering what to suggest. Personally I think Stewart Island is a hidden gem. However part of the attraction is that it is remote and unspoiled. In terms of things to do, essentially you are right. Bushwalks, nice small beaches, fishing. And if you strike wet weather then you won't do much in a day.

I endorse the Arrowtown suggestions too. Lovely area. While there you should drive into Skippers - its an experience in itself. 130 year old road with all the original cliffs and corners.

I've just been to Deep Cove and it is a less touristy alternative to Milford. Well worth considering and you must take a boat trip out on Doubtful Sound, which you'd do at Milford anyway.

The South Island is big and you run the risk of spending half of your time driving. That might be fine, particularly if you amble along. Jacks idea of driving over the Dansey's Pass and then up through the Mckenzie Country is an excellent way of getting a feel for the remote Central Otago regions represented in Graham Sydney's paintings.
