1429188 2016-11-25 19:59:00 Next week I will be replacing the motherboard in my gaming system.
Currently running Windows 10.

Plan A
Link the digital signature to a Microsoft account before removing the old board.
Firstly I don't have a Microsoft account, but I could create one.
What I don't want is to finish up with is passwords on the system.
Is this the likely outcome, or is there a way around it.

Plan B
Re-install Windows 10 & hope that it can be activated with the original Windows 7 key.

Plan C
Re-install Windows 7.
See if it will still activate it with the original key.
Then upgrade to Windows 10 & hope it will still activate.

Plan D
Something else.

Would also recommend having passwords. :)

1429191 2016-11-25 20:41:00 So is there a way to do plan A without passwords? Driftwood (5551)
1429192 2016-11-25 20:52:00 So is there a way to do plan A without passwords? Yep, simply sign in with a Microsoft account, once you have done all the things you want to do then switch back to a local account with no password. Any activations , data , programs will stay put. If at any stage you want to use something that requires a MS Account Eg: The Store, simply sign into the Store app only. ( there's an option to do it but you have to look close to see it.)

Thats what I do on several workshop PC's.

1429193 2016-11-25 21:03:00 More info here to link your Windows 10 Activation to your Microsoft Account

This allows for the change of the Motherboard and not forfeiting the Licence that was not an option prior to the Anniversary update

1429194 2016-11-25 22:14:00 I just tried on a old system here & got the confirmation "Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account"

So how many systems can you link to your account?

1429196 2016-11-25 22:49:00 Looks fairly straight foward.
I guess the big test will be next week.
Interesting, I actually used a gmail address to logon to MS.

Thanks for the help guys.
