1427191 2016-10-12 23:18:00 A good reason that NZ does not become a Republic. We could get such clowns standing for President.

I agree to some extent, but you are making an assumption that a republic needs a President - this suggests a figure with Presidential powers like the POTUS. It doesn't have to be that way - there could be a State figurehead like the present Governor General, with that person's limited powers. The main difference would be that they are the Head of State rather than a deputy for an overseas hereditary monarch. It would largely be a ceremonial role with restricted powers over legislation, and (IMHO) no powers such as those allegedly held by Kerr in Australia (remember Kerr's Cur?).

They could be appointed by the gumberment as is the present GG (and frankly our governments of different colours haven't done too badly at this job since the job was restricted to NZ appointees, though I suspend judgement on the present non-entity). Or there could be other constitutional arrangements such as requiring approval by 75% of MPs so as to take the appointment away from the tyranny of the major party in power at the time. And there could be all sorts of restrictions such as a disqualification for anyone who had ever served in the NZ House of Representatives, to prevent appointments as horrific as Keith Jacka Holyoake happening again. I don't think a figurehead like that would necessarily require an election or referendum to ratify a gumberment appointment (remember how much the last referendum cost?).

The key would be to make the position no more attractive than the current GG's appointment, so as to restrict time servers and old boys from calling in favours to get the position. If the GG's powers were restricted as I suggest, this would limit the attractiveness to a PM and Cabinet of appointing one of their buddies to manipulate the Parliamentary process the way Kerr did.

We need to get away from thinking of a Republic as being like America, and have some open thinking about what would suit us.

BTW, you get clowns from having a hereditary system like the Poms - you are at the mercy of primogeniture, which means having Chuck as HO State...

At a recent meeting of surgeons

One of them said, 'I'm the best surgeon in the state. In my favourite case, a concert pianist lost seven fingers in an accident; I re-attached them, and 8 months later he performed a private concert for the Queen of England.'

The second surgeon said. 'That's nothing. A young man lost an arm and both legs in an accident; I reattached them, and 2 years later he won a gold Medal in track and field events in the Olympics'.

The third surgeon said, 'You guys are amateurs. Several years ago a man was high on cocaine and marijuana and he rode a horse head-on into a train, travelling at 80 miles an hour. All I had left to work with was the man's blonde hair and the horse's ass. I was able to put them together and now he's running for president of the USA"!

1427193 2016-10-14 04:51:00 Tell you what, it is bloody scary if Clinton and Trump are the best they can find to lead their country.

My thoughts entirely, a mystery that their sytem is so faulty.

1427195 2016-10-14 05:56:00 If I was a Yank I would be a single issue voter and that is guns. I would vote Trump because I think Clinton might weaken the gun laws which I think are pretty cool. prefect (6291)
1427196 2016-10-15 00:18:00 But the Democrats tactic’s of having the Media rake up Ugly old ladies that have taken 30 odd years to remember they were sexually assaulted by Trump, reflects poorly on both themselves and the Media.

As for the Debates, well I couldn’t bring myself to watch any of them right through, but what I saw was a classic case of “Two Fools Met”.

Talking about that this morning, Just some wannabe's trying to get 5 minutes of fame .

Why didn't they do something about it at the time, instead of years later, if it happened at all . ;)

Yes, it probably didn't happen at all and she's still sulking . :D

Still, you can bet $'s changed hands somewhere .

Mind you, we have our own Nut-case Stripper that complained she was "Inappropriately Touched" whilst Stripping at the Chiefs Christmas do .

Someone should explain to her that as a Stripper it's an "Occupational Hazard" and had she consulted OSH and worn the appropriate clothing it would never have happened .

I can only surmise she was "Lap Dancing" at the time .

And we're supposed to take these twits seriously . :crying
