1429034 2016-11-23 20:21:00 You could try something like WSUSOffline (http://www.wsusoffline.net/). This will grab all the updates and dump them to a folder (or you can make an iso) on your PC. Then you can install them 'offline'. autechre (266)
1429035 2016-11-23 20:23:00 On one hand Microsoft emphasises so much on Windows updates, but on the other hand MS makes it almost impossible to get the updates!

What the hell is all this about?

I agree, Its a disgrace, just a buggy mess. I suspect there are thousands of Win7 PC's out there just not updating anymore because of all this.

The monthly update rollups do have patches to fix winupdate issues, but unless those monthly rollups can be installed , winupdate may not work
And if a Win7 PC hasnt updated for some several months (for any number of reasons) , chances are it will have update issues
Every 7 re-install Ive done in the last few months has had these update issues

The laptop I looked at yesterday :I got Winupdates works, but was a long drawn out task to do so.
You MUST do All the rollups from the convinence rollup onwards, all the monthly rollups. You must stop the update service to install them if having issues
The laptop yesterday took several attempts to install each rollup .

heres what I found out yesterday
if the update rollup just sits there for 5 minutes doing nothing : consider it failed : so DISABLE the update service, that will kill off the failed update attempt
Then re-enable the update service, but make sure that service is stopped (it will restart itself, thats OK). The update rollup will then go through, but still may need a few attempts .
:badpc: :badpc: :badpc:

so look at the date of when Winupdates stopped working. You need to download each monthly update rollup from that date on (incl that month) . Dont skip any, as not all
have the patch to fix this mess.

1429036 2016-11-23 20:27:00 start with this one, then do every monthly rollup , in order . Download all monthly updates, then disconnect from internet, turn off Winupdates from control panel & stop the update service (services.msc).

1429037 2016-11-23 21:58:00 If its any consolation, The install I did last night is doing the same as yours. Working on it though - Well will be after doing some real work. :)

The problem is that Windows 7 is no longer supported, its gone end of life, its gone the exact same way as XP.

Not quite, it is still in extended support until January 14 2020, so there will still be security updates.
But I think Microsoft are making it very hard to keep using it as they want everyone to get onto Windows 10.

Yep, know that, but what's also happened is the way Microsoft push out updates has changed to the way W10 receives them, they now do Monthly Rollouts, and in doing so W7 is finding it a bit harder to get them.

As explained on MS site
From October 2016 onwards, Windows will release a single Monthly Rollup that addresses both security issues and reliability issues in a single update. The Monthly Rollup will be published to Windows Update (WU), WSUS, SCCM, and the Microsoft Update Catalog. Each month’s rollup will supersede the previous month’s rollup, so there will always be only one update required for your Windows PCs to get current

1429039 2016-11-24 03:50:00 FINALLYYYYYYYYYYYY Got it working. :banana

But wasn't quite the same way as others have posted.

After trying for ages to sort out the problem using the above methods and getting really annoyed  , Doing a bit more research I came across windows-7-wont-update-what-to-do/ (plugable.com) right to point 12 then stopped. Downloaded the KB's on another PC, put on USB drive.

Wiped the drive clean - Whoooooooose gone :D Reinstalled from fresh W7 x86, stayed connected to the internet, followed the instructions from the above site, putting in the KB's in the order listed.

One NOTICABLE difference was after each reboot except 1 time it went through the "configuring Windows" message where as other methods didn't

When finished manually checked for updates: after a couple of minutes up popped the updates window.

Once Done, will image it, then sysprep so it can go onto any PC like a new install, all the updates already done until today :)

THEN to do a x64 version.

1429040 2016-11-24 06:14:00 Tell me Wainui, how is the man on the street expected to handle all these failed Microsoft updates when you have this much difficulty?

Updates should be, and used to be, a simple procedural matter.

So let’s face it, Microsoft have screwed up big time.

So let’s face it, Microsoft have screwed up big time. That's why People have different jobs. If everyone could do everything then no one would need a job.

That's why when it comes to computer problems, I'll keep working away at a problem ( If I really want to solve it) until I do. The only time I'll give up is if its completely impossible to resolve.

Not everyone can be a plumber, or electrician or Pilot, or Driving instructor, Builder - you get the idea.
Looking at your own Profile you have written "Retired transmission & telephone technician " Not everyone could do the job you did, just like you cant do every job. Its the way the world works.

Updates have always had problems with every OS for years and years. Some people don't have any problems while others have nothing but problems.

I've worked on computers that Have had problems with updates in Win98, to present day, so its nothing new.

My Own computers here, never had any problems with windows 10 updates. Except One time I did was when I tracked the problems to a failing HDD. Nothing to do with windows.

Well I guess, in view of what you say, Microsoft should at least put out a notice that Pensioners and Lay-People should budget at least $200 a Month to have a Technician fix their computer after the enforced Updates, Spyware and Crapware has been installed. :)

, Spyware and Crapware has been installed. :) That could depend on several things.

The Type of computer, How the person uses the computer Eg, goes to "questionable" sites, The skill of the tech who originally setup or fixed the computer, what junk programs, malware (if any) get installed. I've seen some Company Techs do a patch job that they know wont hold just so they will be called back again and recharge, then blame the person for causing the problem again.

In Bold-- if the Tech knows what they are doing and does the job correctly the first time then they wouldn't need to return all the time. Do you know how many problems are caused simply because people do silly things, & don't bother doing BASIC maintenance ???? , I'll tell you 90% of the time.

Note: the Type of computer I'm referring to is Laptops, the most problematic are ones that came with a factory install, its because the manufactures load up all sorts of non standard partitions that cause problems. Have a look at ANY HP computer, on average 6 Partitions, full of crapware. BUT a fresh install - 2 default partitions no "extra" crap trial programs and they run fine.

A HIGH percentage of my customers I only go back maybe once or twice a year to do a general service. In Fact MANY I have a yearly appointment with, when its time to renew their nod32, just to give the computers a yearly service, update any outdated programs etc. Other times its for things not related to updates, may want new hardware, routers playing up, etc.

Sure sometimes updates don't always go as planed, but most go as they should.

In relation to the above, please answer this: WHY is it that some people have problems and some don't, its all the same update ?
