1427743 2016-10-23 23:28:00 .

The whole thing with all these embedded Linux devices will take some fixing though .
I might just replace my Spark ADSL modem-router when non-vulnerable ones come on the market.
Won't hurt as it's the crappy old TG582n one they give out.
Don't have a smartphone so no worries about Android, and our fridge and toaster are ancient too.

Yee Har, finally an advantage to being a late-adopter.

:D

Manufactures ( or providers) pushing out "patches" for various devices like Modems/ routers, internet connected devices is always a bit of a gamble. There will always be someone whose device fails to work correctly afterwards.

Bit like Vodafone a while back pushing out a firmware upgrade for its decoders - It caused all sorts of problems with devices not starting again correctly. Thankfully Vodafone still could reload the old firmware back via its remote connections and fix it.

1427745 2016-10-24 01:37:00 This vulnerability seems to be a bit hyped up by the media but it does deserve some credit .

This problem was known 11 years ago (at a guess, I can't locate the previous bug of this that was discovered) but Linus ( . wikipedia . org/wiki/Linus_Torvalds" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org) failed to fix this problem properly .

Is this the bug of all time? I don't think so, these things just happen and it's not nearly enough media coverage to make people panic .

As soon as this zero day was discovered it was patched the same day . I just hope that it is fixed properly now . Also, Microsoft ( . microsoft . com/en-nz/" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com) patched 5 zero day exploits the exact same day, so you can't let them off the hook either and they had remote code execution problems, which is usually the holy grail for exploiters .

There will be more like this in the future, and it usually will affect anyone, at any given time, no matter if you're Linux ( . linuxfoundation . org/), Windows, Mac (https://www . apple . com/mac/" target="_blank">www . linuxfoundation . org/), Windows, Mac (https:), Android ( . com/), etc . Every operating system has had it's fair share and unless you're keeping eyes on the CVE (https://cve . mitre . org/" target="_blank">android . com/), etc . Every operating system has had it's fair share and unless you're keeping eyes on the CVE (https:), you may never hear about any of the amazing bugs that use to exist in the software world .

1427746 2016-10-24 06:03:00 Two Questions .

1 . If you did something to cause, or you got hacked would you still say that ?
2 . Are you going to patch your MOooooooooo ?

Some of you guys are funny .

You’re just a bunch of “Cypher Space Hypochondriacs” .

You’re the equivalence of all the dicks that believed “Aids” would wipe out civilisation . (I’m hanging around waiting) .

You’re the equivalent of all the dicks that ran around appeasing a Drug Company because “Bird Flu” was going to wipe us out . (I’m hanging around waiting) .

You’re the equivalent of all the dicks that ran around appeasing a Drug Company because “Swine Flu” was going to wipe us out . (I’m hanging around waiting) .

I could go on, but can’t be bothered .

In the meantime, if you’re so bothered about these “Computer Diseases” just back-up your Data to a external Drive and wait for the attach .

Move over Methuselah .

Its the same ol thing as soon as you asked to prove something you resort to insults or completely ignore the questions -- typical of you. You are getting to be so boring and so predictable, say one thing but do another. I'm surprised you haven't said its all made up.

Your slipping mooooooooo -- Wheres the outdated links to bugs that were fixed months ago that you repeatably post and the rose tinted glasses insult. ???

1427748 2016-10-24 07:20:00 And before you start ranting on again saying it wont happen. Try using your fingers, go search google and you'll find many security sites saying similar to this quote:

Red Hat also confirmed that attackers are using an exploit leveraging the Dirty COW in the wild.

Mooooooooooooooo !!!

Well the problem is I don’t know of anyone who has been the subject of a “Hack” or any sort of problem of this nature propounded by the Media.

Sure, I’ve seen the odd so called “Virus”, but if you’ve backed up your important files it doesn’t matter a stuff.

Consider a “Virus” on the same basis as a Hard Disk failure and you can’t go wrong.

Plus, the average “Jo Blow” will probably experience a Hard Disk failure before a “Virus Wipe-out”.

Oh, and Wainui, I have absolutely no intention of taking precautions against being hit on the head by “Space Junk” returning to earth.

Sorry.

1427750 2016-10-24 08:47:00 Doesn't matter what OS a person Uses they should always backup data they dont want to lose. Good in theory, but still many don't and its not until something happens that they panic.

Re the first line written -- Just because you don't know of anyone doesn't mean it doesn't or wont happen.

Take the DDoS attack, didn't notice any thing, some did some didn't. (Read Freds links on another Post in chat) HERE (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) Just because not everyone got effected doesn't mean it didn't happen.

The key words in one article are in bold
Today a vast army of hijacked internet-connected devices – from security cameras and video recorders to home routers – turned on their owners and broke a big chunk of the web. Some will have linux kernels, some will be Windows, or what ever software was compromised.

Suggest you read the complete article from the link at theregister, its actual proof that when the bad guys want to launch an attack it will happen to unprotected devices (note I say devices, not Computers) The majority of devices used, their owners probably had no idea it was happening.
