1426870 2016-10-05 19:58:00 Yeah, the Redmi3 has a slightly better range of bands it supports:

It's the model prior to the Redmi3S and doesn't have a fingerprint reader, plus a slightly different CPU etc

1426871 2016-10-06 00:42:00 Sweet as. I've got one on the way - wife's birthday coming up, so that covers that! :p

Thanks for the help.

1426872 2016-10-06 06:04:00 Protip: Flash MIUI8 via EDL mode
Some friends / family that imported their own had issues with non-standard firmware being on them... It's worth just grabbing the latest official firmware for them from here:
en.miui.com

Flash and flash that in EDL mode, you'll be good :)

1426873 2016-10-06 06:07:00 this thread is helpful for everyone excluding myself thus far.

the real question is, can i get by with just wcdma 850/2100 instead of getting a handset that has both.

most of the cheap phones on aliexpress are quadband GSM, some of the slightly more expensive ones ($20) have limited wcdma, either having none or one of the frequencies supported by spark.

The XT Mobile Network is a UMTS and LTE mobile network run by Spark New Zealand (formerly Telecom New Zealand). The network was initially built nationwide on WCDMA/UMTS 850 MHz, with 2100 MHz infill in major urban areas.

since im a suburbanite, will a phone supporting just 2100 MHz UMTS be fine?

You've just shown there's not going to be any helping you, with unrealistic expectations like that.

Thanks heaps, really appreciate it.

And don't be so down Middres, just work on vicariously experiencing the assistance this thread has given to others, while you find more than $20 for a new phone. :pf1mobmini:

Ps - www.willmyphonework.net might be handy for you.

1426878 2016-10-06 23:09:00 Use this site to look up a ph for NZ compatibility

http://willmyphonework.net/

also
www.skinny.co.nz

Have a look at gearbest & bangood , they both sell cheap ph's . Might be easier to find something with them , than aliexpress (too many sellers & choices) ?
Also, due to lithium batt airfreight laws , some sellers have limited options on sending & some actually send via europe (China to Eu(by ship) to NZ)

1426879 2016-10-06 23:57:00 The local supermarket often has a bin full of cheapo phones for one network or the other.
I don't like them myself, the original list of requirements is almost exactly the opposite of what I'd want. I tend to search trademe for last years flagship phones when the new models come out and those that feel the need for the latest and greatest start selling them off.
