1429410 2016-12-04 05:29:00 Hi guys, this might be a dumb question but.......I use Outlook 2010 at work, I am going on a road trip and need my email to send an out of office reply, which I have setup. The problem is as far as I can tell it won't work if my laptop is offline, I don't use an exchange (think that's what it's called) to set it up as it doesn't seem to be an option, is there anyway around this. There's not much point in an out of office if it won't send the messages to tell people. I will only be able to turn the computer on and go online in the evenings and I'm guessing it won't then send an out of office message out to all the emails that came in while it was offline.....is that right? 1429412 2016-12-04 06:50:00 Yes, Outlook's out-of-office is a simple rule to send your message to every email it receives.
If it's not running it won't respond, and when you turn it on it will reply to each mail that comes in.
For it to work as expected you need your Outlook running and connected at all times.
Alternatively, set up an auto-response on your mail server.

1429413 2016-12-04 07:11:00 Just to clarify, you're saying when it's turned back on it will only respond to any new emails that come in from that point, it won't respond to any of the emails that came in while it was turned off? DakotaNZ (17161)
1429414 2016-12-04 07:40:00 Well, no mails 'come in' while it's off, they all arrive (into Outlook) when it is turned on and checks the server for new mail, so it will reply to every mail received (at the time you turn it on, or shortly therafter). fred_fish (15241)
1429415 2016-12-04 07:42:00 Perfect! That's what I was wondering, thank you. So long as it sends out the out of office to everyone who emails me I'm happy, even if it only sends it out in the evening when I turn it on :) DakotaNZ (17161)

dont assume :)
test it, send to that email address with a gmail a/c & see what happens
And make sure that power save , sleep & hybernate are turned off. Also turn off winupdates (as they may force a restart)

If possible, dont rely on that for more than a day or so, for longer periods you may be able to set out of office on the mail server via webmail (depends on mail hosts setup).
Or get someone to check every day that outlook is running .

If you do use exchange at work (ask them) , then outlook doesnt need to be running (unless its hosted cloud exchange, that may not support it )
