694236 2008-08-02 04:16:00 First it started with control panel not opening so I looked around on the net and found it was probably because sl ui service was not running, so tried to start that up and could not because dependencies were not running. So went through that list, and found software licencing not running.
when i try to start it it gives me
"windows could not start the software licencing service on local computer.
error 2: the system cannot find the file specified"

Now, slsvc.exe is sitting exactly where it is meant to in windows/system32/ which is where the service says the executable is. Even if i try manually start it up by double clicking or running it in a elevated command prompt it just sits there blank for about 20 seconds then the window closes, or it goes back to waiting for command.

Any idea on how to fix the service? I have had a bit of a look around but there's not much useful information on it.

Tried startup repair and doing the sfc/scannow. both passed fine. I do not have system restore running, so I'm starting to think a reinstall is in order.

Are you using Vista 64 bit??

If you are, those missing entries may mean hijackthis doesnt fully support 64 bit. According to some sites. Dont worry about it

694241 2008-08-02 05:14:00 This may or may not fix the problem - bit of back ground history first- I have a couple of customers who have problems with Vista's control panel not opening, and other services not working, the printers wont print.

copy the below text exactly as written to notepad ( I'll put it in blue) then save it as Tempfix.bat double click it, press y, then enter and that will restart the services as mentioned above.

@net stop "Software Licensing"
@net start "Software Licensing"

If the above .bat fixes the problem, a work around is to click start, open All Programs, scroll down till you locate the Startup folder, right click it - open, copy the tempfix.bat file into that folder, it will run each time windows starts.

694242 2008-08-02 06:34:00 speedy: yes, using 64bit business.
wainuitech: using that batch file, control panel now opens and stays open but is empty and has a small red x at the end of the address bar where the refresh button usually is, pressing it closes the window

694243 2008-08-02 06:45:00 Did you reboot after ticking those entries in the log? Speedy Gonzales (78)
694244 2008-08-02 06:49:00 Ah, looks like the prob youre seeing (the blank control panel) can happen if youre using a Nvidia videocard.

Here's a few sites, with the same prob as yours

Here (thevistaforums.com)

And here (forums.microsoft.com)

Try this from the 2nd link (If youre using Nvidia drivers)

Here is a workaround:

1) Launch services.msc from a run command
2) Find the SLUNotify service & stop it
3) Find the Software Licensing service & stop it (it may say that ReadyBoost needs that service to run; stop it anyway)
4) Restart both services, starting with Software Licensing

Yeap, certainly did. no change thus far apart from control panel shows the red cross. still quits itself after about 20 seconds though.
