| 693976 | 2008-08-01 02:18:00 | I wish to transfer some Forte Agent Usenet newsgroup postings on another computer to mine, so I can help the owner of the target machine scan a large amount of text in the postings for useful information. The content of all messages for a particular Usenet group is stored in a *.DAT and an *.IDX file in the \Agent\Data\ folder in a compressed form; so it would be convenient to copy just the files for the pertient newsgroups and "paste" them into a clean copy of Agent. Any original messages that have been saved will reappear in readable form. I have experimented with this and proved it works. The problem is that the *.DAT and *.IDX files are named obscurely, with an eight-digit hexadecimal number (eg 00001D4A.DAT). This appears to be a direct serial count through the groups available from a particular server, starting, for some reason at 00000002. Because a different number of groups are available on the servers accessed by the target computer and mine, the numbering between the two instances of Agent is infuriatingly incompatible. There are therefore, as far as I can see, only two ways of identifying the *.DAT and *.IDX files that contain the data from a particular group: - count the all groups list on a given server painstakingly (and in hexadecimal!) until you reach the desired group. OR - Link the machine to the internet and get the headings of a sample of new postings in the desired group; then explore the \Agent\Data folder to see which *DAT and *.IDX files are the latest to be updated. For various reasons, the latter is not convenient on this particular target computer and I'm apprehensive about relevant postings being deleted if I do connect and update. The former sounds tedious in the extreme. I feel there should at least be a way of selecting a swathe of groups in the "groups/folders" view and having the application tell you how many groups have been selected. That might at least short-circuit the tedious counting. Does anyone have a smart and quick way of figuring which .DAT and .IDX file is associated with what group? Oh BTW, this is Agent v2.0 we're talking about :-) |
