693879 2008-07-31 09:00:00 I went to look at my brothers computer today becasue he was getting win antivir 2008 warnings saying he had a virus. as well as a host of other issues control panel gone, programes missing from start menu, no admin access etc.

So I installed and ran SUPERantiSpyware and it proceeded to find and kill 57 infections, I then installed and ran spybot search and destroy and found more infections.

New, my brother had AVG free running on his computer, it was updated everyday and scanned everyday, reporting a clean bill of house every day as did ad-aware.

So neither of these products found any of the 57 infections... which begs the question.. is there really any point in using these products any more?

Are we better off just running SUPERAntiSpyWare and S&D?

693880 2008-07-31 09:10:00 Are you sure these 'infections' were not tracking cookies? They are harmless and it is not AVG's duty to find them. trinsic (6945)
693881 2008-07-31 09:11:00 Use something better, like avast and malwarebytes Speedy Gonzales (78)
693882 2008-07-31 09:59:00 Win antivir 2008 is an infection its self, and prob the cause of most of the problems.

The General protection I use on customers PC's is as Follows:

Antivirus- Paid= Nod32 Free = Avast

Antispyware- All free (links in My Sig) - Spyware Terminator, Spybot S&D, Malware Bytes, & Sometimes Super Antispyware.

FULL instructions on how to use them, with Spyware terminator set to Real Time Protection turned On.

yep it certainly was. I became quite suspicious when it started listing legitimate programs as virus'.

I was really surprised that AVG didn't find even one of the 57 infections, neither the virus scanner, or the resident shield was of any use at all. Makes me wonder why AVG keeps getting recommended by computer magazines.

693885 2008-07-31 11:37:00 I've used Avast for the last month of so, as did my fiancee, and we hated it- made everything soooooo slow! :(

Would I be right in assuming that we need to tune it a bit more? Fiancee's one was set to low protection, and was still painfully slow...

693886 2008-07-31 22:35:00 In general, Antivirus software != anti malware/spyware software. Your AV software looks for viruses not spyware, which is why you get Antispyware software to do it.

Antivir is one of the best free AV programs around, so just use it in combination with anti-spyware software & the PC should be ok in the future.

This may depend on how much ram is installed. It may also be conflicting with something (it looks like one version had probs with Opera, till it was updated)

You can also disable different providers (right mouse on the a in the taskbar, on access access protection). For things you dont usually use. In my case, I disabled P2P / Outlook, webshield (this can slow browsing down), since I use OE more than Outlook, and I dont use P2P programs.

Low protection like what? If you disable some providers, it'll disable it altogether

According to the MicroSoft web site (www.microsoft.com urity&tid=95ed7bfb-2f03-4946-8ae3-78663281d39f&cat=en_us_fdf138d6-427a-48d6-84dc-a91a6c9fbb45&lang=en&cr=us&sloc=en-us&m=1&p=1) Win AntiVir 2008 is "one of the many rogue antivirus/antimalware programs."

And from what I saw yesterday, when it started reporting MS Word, AVG, and a host of other "normal" applications as being trojan virus' I'm inclined to believe what all the web sites say about it.

It's evil and twisted.
