442320 2006-03-31 01:18:00 After ten years of dial up, finally we will get broadband but I wonder about the cost per month, which depends on data used. If you know your data usage and use the internet in the way detailed below (this will cut out many of you high end users!) can you give me an idea of how many Mb's per month is the norm?

I do not download music or videos, do not play online games, no video conferencing, no internet phone. Only the usual email and web browsing and anti virus / spyware and other such updates.

iHug seems to have a good deal at only $30 / month plus no charge for the modem. There may be better deal when Xtra unwraps their "cheaper faster" packages, so I will wait and see.

BTW, iHug does not have a "reduce to dialup speed" once the data cap is reached, but charge 6 cents per Mb.

Thanks.

442321 2006-03-31 01:28:00 For basic e-mail and web browsing 1GB should be more than enough. I have a freind that has the 1GB plan and uses it for the same purposes as you and with a week to go he still has 700MB left.

However, you may start to view a few streaming videos etc as you find the speed benefit and branch out to other things. You can keep an eye on it via your usage meter and if the time arises when 1GB is not enough anymore you can always upgrade the plan.

But in the meantime a 1GB cap should be more than adequate.

Hope this helps.

442322 2006-03-31 01:48:00 When I went to broadband it seemed that 1 gig was 'just' enough .

Like yourself I only viewed pages and didn't download much, but with broadband you quickly get into watching videoclips, with the news etc, and it sneeks up on you .

Broadband really makes the net more interesting now and as a result you tend to be on it more than in the past . So be prepared for an increase .

442323 2006-03-31 03:03:00 Go for a plan that gives you 3 gigs - that'll certainly cover you.

I download masses of stuff, and am online 18 hours per day, play a fair bit of online gaming, and only seldom go over 3 gigs.

442324 2006-03-31 05:57:00 BTW, iHug does not have a "reduce to dialup speed" once the data cap is reached, but charge 6 cents per Mb . According to this page ( . ihug . co . nz/products/broadband/" target="_blank">www . ihug . co . nz) they do reduce your speed when you reach your limit:

If you do reach either of your data allowances you just surf at 64kbps during that time period for the rest of the month - so you don't need to worry about excess fees .

The $29 . 95 plan is for only 500MB per month which you may possibly only just scrape in with just email and web browsing plus very few updates . The next plan, the Starter option, would be ample .

You can always sign up for one plan and if it doesn't fit change it to another for the next month .

442325 2006-03-31 06:02:00 if its another month before you go to broadband...or even a few weeks

why dont you look at your activity for a week and time it by 5 (4= a month...and a extra week just to be sure)
and many websites like telecom/ihug has something for you 2 enter what you do roughly

like emails...5 a week...
browse websites 10 a day etc etc

and it'd tell you how many mb/gb u could approximately use...

i used that to get my starting one, but as i branched out, i went up to next level of broadband and am just right now :)

442326 2006-03-31 11:52:00 Thanks for all of the replies. I am in no hurry, and will wait for the best deals after Xtra unwraps its surprises.

Foxy, the 6 cents per Mb is for the cheapest 500 Mb deal. The other plans go back to 64 kbps, as you state. Yes, the Starter plan, at $10 more a month gives 4 times the amount of data if off peak is added, so if I do start to download more than I expected, that will be the way to go.
