2006-04-06 04:05:00 | No Maiden since the 80's? Shame shame. Granted they went downhill and released a string of crap albums during the 90's, but since regrouping with Bruce Bruce they have been releasing some quality albums, While its not as frantic as earlier efforts Brave New World is a supremely crafted metal master piece created by the elder statesmen of metal who seem to have come to grips with their position in the grand scheme of all things metal. Dance of Death on the other hand has a few tracks that could be perhaps termed weak, but a number of them are killer, and Pashendayle is of epic proportions, worthy of any track from their heyday, including Rime of the ancient mariner. In a foreign field he lay lonely soldier unknown grave on his dying words he prays tell the world of Paschendale Relive all that he's been through last communion of his soul rust your bullets with his tears let me tell you 'bout his years Laying low in a blood filled trench killing time 'til my very own death on my face I can feel the falling rain never see my friends again in the smoke, in the mud and lead smell of fear and feeling of dread soon be time to go over the wall rapid fire and the end of us all Whistles, shouts and more gun fire lifeless bodies hang on barbed wire battlefield nothing but a bloody tomb be reunited with my dead friends soon many soldiers eighteen years drown in mud, no more tears surely a war no one can win killing time about to begin Home, far away. From the war, a chance to live again Home, far away. But the war, no chance to live again The bodies of ours and our foes the sea of death it overflows in no man's land God only knows into jaws of death we go... Crucified as if on a cross allied troops, they mourn their loss German war propaganda machine such before has never been seen swear I heard the angels cry pray to God no more may die so that people know the truth tell the tale of Paschendale Cruelty has a human heart everyman does play his part terror of the men we kill the human heart is hungry still I stand my ground for the very last time gun is ready as I stand in line nervous wait for the whistle to blow rush of blood and over we go... Blood is falling like the rain its crimson cloak unveils again the sound of guns can't hide their shame and so we die in Paschendale Dodging shrapnel and barbed wire running straight at cannon fire running blind as I hold my breath say a prayer symphony of death as we charge the enemy lines a burst of fire and we go down I choke a cry but no one hears feel the blood go down my throat Home, far away. From the war, a chance to live again Home, far away. But the war, no chance to live again Home, far away. From the war, a chance to live again Home, far away. But the war, no chance to live again See my spirit on the wind across the lines beyond the hill friend and foe will meet again those who died at Paschendale

2006-04-06 05:11:00 | The National Station!!! Just listened to the head of ICANN Internet organization Vint Cerf. He was talking about how TCPIP works. Who cares about pop songs when you have this? Nothing nicer than a sunny saturday morning cycling over the port hills listening to Kim Hill talking to interesting people. Does she strangle 'em as she is talking to them? Gawd she's one AGRO woman

2006-04-06 10:01:00 | No Maiden since the 80's? Shame shame. No, I went right off them with the Powerslave album. What killed it for me was 20 minutes or whatever of Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. Absolute snoozefest. Killers was their best. Maiden LPs do very well on TradeMe, my bank account has discovered.

2006-04-06 10:22:00 | whoa. Powerslave is the single best album ever made. By anyone. Ever. Though if you dislike it as you say then you will hate the 2 albums I mentioned above even more so.

2006-04-06 11:45:00 | I've no comments on the musicality mentioned in today's posts (OK, I admit it. Only David Bowie, Leonard Cohen & Queen are even recognisable by me), but who's messing with one of my favourite poem/sagas? The Rime (not Rhyme) of the Ancient Mariner is famous, wonderful, fascinating & historic. It's also one of the few poems my generation learned in high school English that we not only remembered but even read again for interest. It's basically about a bloke who shoots an albatross - and we know that brings bad luck, don't we? It's a saga - packed full of lines which still get quoted today by people who've not a clue where they came from, just as bits of Shakespeare are. . So the original will last longer than any imitations, but who pinched the title & what did they do with it? My query's on behalf of a feller called Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) He'd have got on fine with some recent rock groups, as he had a reputation himself for substance abuse. A famous one reputed to be written under the influence began :- "In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure dome decree..." and the rest of it goes further in weird imaginings than the average rock group's lyrics manage. So Samuel & I wanna know who's trading on his poem title & why? And specially how their lyrics stand up in comparison?

2006-04-06 12:01:00 | They turned it into a song about raping virgens and worshipping satan. Anyhow, Its an audio format, source it, listen to it a few dozen times from multiple angles on a good set of speakers and then judge it, or not. Muhahahahaha. Words can't convey Iron Maiden at their peak. I think you will find that by taking the story into the audio format they do no disrespect to the work. Or the entire idea may disgust you either way, Its all good. Maiden base many of their works on events in history, historical works, and famous litriture.Maiden are no average rock group in any sense of the words, Not rock, Not Average. Lyrics only make up a small portion of the song, the depth is in the music. Something that goes over the head of people who have never ventured past what ever is on the radio, Though classical music lovers "get it".

2006-04-06 12:11:00 | Anyhow, here are the lyrics, But like I said, the lyrics to a song are only a tiny portion of the work, The song structure, musical and vocal performance of this song are where the weight is . . . . Though I'm pretty sure you won't like their "sound" . Strange, I can hear every note of this 15 minute song just by reading through the lyrics . . . . Hear the rime of the ancient mariner See his eye as he stops one of three Mesmerises one of the wedding guests Stay here and listen to the nightmares of the sea . And the music plays on, as the bride passes by Caught by his spell and the mariner tells his tale . Driven south to the land of the snow and ice To a place where nobodys been Through the snow fog flies on the albatross Hailed in gods name, hoping good luck it brings . And the ship sails on, back to the north Through the fog and ice and the albatross follows on . The mariner kills the bird of good omen His shipmates cry against what hes done But when the fog clears, they justify him And make themselves a part of the crime . Sailing on and on and north across the sea Sailing on and on and north til all is calm . The albatross begins with its vengeance A terrible curse a thirst has begun His shipmates blame bad luck on the mariner About his neck, the dead bird is hung . And the curse goes on and on at sea And the curse goes on and on for them and me . day after day, day after day, We stuck nor breath nor motion As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean Water, water everywhere and All the boards did shrink Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink . There calls the mariner There comes a ship over the line But how can she sail with no wind in her sails and no tide . See . . . onward she comes Onward she nears out of the sun See, she has no crew She has no life, wait but heres two . Death and she life in death, They throw their dice for the crew She wins the mariner and he belongs to her now . Then . . . crew one by one They drop down dead, two hundred men She . . . she, life in death . She lets him live, her chosen one . one after one by the star dogged moon, Too quick for groan or sigh Each turned his facce with a ghastly pang And cursed me with his eye Four times fifty living men (and I heard nor sigh nor groan) With heavy thump, a lifeless lump, They dropped down one by one . The curse it lives on in their eyes The mariner wished hed die Along with the sea creatures But they lived on, so did he . And by the light of the moon He prays for their beauty not doom With heart he blesses them Gods creatures all of them too . Then the spell starts to break The albatross falls from his neck Sinks down like lead into the sea Then down in falls comes the rain . Hear the groans of the long dead seamen See them stir and they start to rise Bodies lifted by good spirits None of them speak and theyre lifelesss in their eyes And revenge is still sought, penance starts again Cast into a trance and the nightmare carries on . Now the curse is finally lifted And the mariner sights his home Spirits go fromhe long dead bodies Form their own light and the mariners left alone . And then a boat came sailing towards him It was a joy he could not believe The pilots boat, his son and the hermit, Penance of life will fall onto him . And the ship sinks like lead into the sea And the hermit shrieves the mariner of his sins . The mariners bound to tell of his story To tell this tale wherever he goes To teach gods word by his own example That we must love all things thaat God made . And the wedding guests a sad and wiser man And the tale goes on and on and on .

2006-04-06 13:24:00 | Oh good - at least they stuck with the story. (I had visions of gawdknowswhat) Yep, agree I need to hear the music, knowing that many of the songs I remember fondly look pretty wet on lyrics alone. Those lyrics look pretty good in comparison with stuff I danced my backside off to. Looks as though I need to start by digging up the speakers I stored away when cleaning up after my flood (another story) and then listening to this lot. Ta, metla. P.S. A second reading of the lyrics shows they did very well indeed with the overall story (and pinched some good quotes) so I hope the music lives up to it,
