442827 2006-04-02 20:21:00 When I was in Auckland all we had in the garden were bumblebees. They did a good job and are apparently increasing due to the lack of competition now.

Down here in the South there are plenty of both types of bees here.

Ban all unnecessary imports I say, thats why NZ doesn't make anything anymore - too much importing from China.

442828 2006-04-02 21:50:00 Sort of on-topic (in a coals-to-Newcastle kind of way) but why are we importing things like honey and... umm... tomatoes?

I was in the supermarket last week looking for canned tomatoes. Product of China. Product of Italy. Gave up & bought real tomatoes for a recipie that called for a can of tomatoes.

So we can't grow tomatoes or make honey anymore?

Have you never noticed how crap our tomatoes taste compared to Italian? :yuck:

Have to say though that I've never tasted better honey than manuka.

442830 2006-04-02 22:02:00 I think the secret to italian tomatoes might be the addition of a little herb and spice as part of the canning process. Clearly adding herb or spice is something beyond the skills of a kiwi cook :p

Personally i grow my own tomatoes, but canned tomatoes have there place as part of stocking up for winter. Why they come from overseas i do not know.

one of the reasons is simply cost. the mass production required to keep the cost down. loaclly most of the tomatoes places have closed down along with a lot of other vege places. farmers simply don't get paid jack, they make the money with volume of product something thats hard to do if your not a muilti million dollar corp. hence so much interest in "farmers markets" these days.

its up to consumers to push for what products they want before the dissappear for ever. i had someone turn down some peaches the other day due to the mark on them you get where they lie against the branch. nothing wrong with the fruit, the person just exspects everything to be pefect like those plastic fruit on tv commericals. talk about consumerism !

No, can't say I have . But then I'd only buy tomatoes such as the Bellisimo brand grown in Pukekohe, real tomatoes not those plastic tasting things imported from Aussie .
Also don't put them in the fridge, it kills the flavour .
Apart from that I gow my own and so far have alsways had an excess - which get chopped up and frozen for use during winter so I don't have to buy canned ones .

442833 2006-04-04 11:25:00 ok.....who saw the protest on TV tonight ?

MAF and the dumb politician gave some weak replys... "we are going to heat treat the honey to lower the risk" typical....lower the risk not REMOVE THE RISK !

It almost completely removes the food value! As has been pointed out, flavored colored sugar water never stopped cocacola from marketing it's "food" product, but i would have thought consumers wanted more from honey

Quality....... It seems that that is becoming a forgotten concept.
