442817 2006-04-02 01:26:00 Is it my imagination, or has south Island honey got more expensive in the last few months? personthingy (1670)
442818 2006-04-02 01:34:00 With American foul brood and the veroa bee mite already here I think it is already too late.
In the Wairarapa there are hardly any wild bees anymore because of the veroa mite and you see the problem of it through the lack of pollination. It is going to affect farming in all sorts of ways.
Pollination businesses will increase just to cover what the wild bees did before.
It's a pitty they didn't put as much into getting rid of the veroa bee mite as the painted apple moth.

442819 2006-04-02 08:50:00 veroa mite came in with some smuggled queens afaik. its not really transportable by honey unlike AFB or EFB which are fungi and virus's. veroa HAS wiped out ALL wild bees, any bees you see have ear tags ;) lol. most of the "wild" bees you see today are swarms from bee keepers hives. they will die within 6 months or so.
pollination prices have increased to cover what wild bees used to do for free.

if we get infected with EFB we will lose high numbers of hives forceing pollination prices higher than what some orchards can afford.

what sort of prices is the honey in south island at the moment?

442820 2006-04-02 09:32:00 what sort of prices is the honey in south island at the moment?High enough at the funky pumpkin that i was surprised by it's price, and therefore only bought a minimal amount..

I'll go into town and get a more accurate pricing tommorrow.

We buy manuka honey through Raewards down here. It is from the Honey and Lavender Co in Akaroa, and very good it is too.

It costs about $12 per kg, which is a low price. We used to buy our manuka honey from Anatoki in Takaka for about $16 for 2kg, but prices for manuka honey have gone insane in recent years, probably because of all of the publicity about it rather than varroa. Comvita prices for manuka are extortionate.

Not sure of other prices, because we don't buy anything else.

442822 2006-04-02 10:44:00 around here its $14-$15 per kg manuka. i've heard of a few places in north island selling it for a whole lot more. tweak'e (69)
442823 2006-04-02 11:04:00 I suspect ours is cheaper because it is a bulk order through Raewards. It seems much more expensive in the supermarket.

Do you think it is varroa or the hype about manuka honey that is to blame for the increase in manuka honey prices? My feeling is that the big increase in manuka prices started before varroa, and are attributable to publicity about the health properties of activated manuka honey. Time was when it was called "bush honey" and it was hard to sell.

My grandma used to be an apiarist and we used to get huge tins of clover honey from her that I could barely carry as a child. Not sure what size they were now, but I attribute my love of the stuff to getting lots of it straight after mother's milk...

442824 2006-04-02 11:20:00 ahh the old kero tin of honey ;) i'm much the same myself except it was 20 litre drums!

like with anything retail, prices are dictated to by the consumer. supply and demand at work. prices vary a lot and also depends a lot on some of the big players ie if they flood the market with honey or not. i dount varora has impacted the prices much, cost of fuel has more impact. however it certainly has made the price of pollenation go up a lot.

442825 2006-04-02 11:21:00 My mother & grandmother bought our clover honey in those red tins, John.
The lids fitted so well they were kept for storing all kinds of things later.
I used to sneak biscuits from the tall ones after baking days. They got moved out to the shed after years of use.
(Might still be a battered 10lb one lurking at the back)

442826 2006-04-02 20:18:00 In my wild Wet Coast days i bought a 20liter bucket of honey for $100 of someone just up the road who kept bees . I dumped it all into a 200 liter plastic barrel, added cinnamon, water, and yeast, and produced 18 beercrates worth of finest mead . Very potent stuff .

The dregs filled most of the 20 liter bucket, and were disposed of at a party at the local hall as free alcohol, and i was consequently blamed for the post-drunken mess that was there in the morning . . tee hee
