442686 2006-04-01 04:22:00 It seems that Americans haven't heard of Ed Hillary. ;)

Manly Men Shun Fairydown - Travel Gear Blog
Fairydown is almost entirely unheard of in the USA, there are no distributors for the brand ... The name "Fairydown" could be, in some circles, problematic. ...

442687 2006-04-01 04:24:00 On the Arthur Ellis sale -

This is pure speculation on my part, but as a Dunedinite who once knew a little about the firm, I'm guessing that the sale is one of those generational changes.

Graham Ellis, who was a son/grandson? of the original Arthur Ellis, and an old friend of Sir Ed (who also played a major part in the Tractor expedition to the Antarctic with him) died here a few months ago.
The family had already sold off much of the original business, and I expect the death of Graham prompted the sale of the remainder - or maybe just an awareness from the majority owners that the Ellis name's associations are also dying out..?

(For example, for every forum member who knew of the Sir Ed link, there'd be ??? youngies who don't know or care. C'est la vie..)

It's the export market the name's been strongest in, so I hope they keep the product standard up.

442690 2006-04-02 01:18:00 . . . Media-shy Cameron, who is worth an estimated $110 million, also owns Kathmandu and divides her time between Australia and Christchurch .

Arthur Ellis chief executive Mary Devine confirmed the deal had taken place but said any further information was "up to the other side" .

"I can confirm that we have sold the Fairydown and Great Outdoors brands effective from March 31 . No further comment will be made . "

Cameron could not be reached for comment . That's the substance of the The Press story .

442691 2006-04-02 01:46:00 Terry you have got a point there especially about wanting "real" tramping gear. But I wouldn't consider Katmandu to provide any sort of fashion statement.

The trendiest clothing to wear are the Icebreaker merino thermals which I havn't seen katmandu stock.

Despite their often mediocre gear, they can be very cheap if you go during the sales, like now. For example i got some cooking pots, for tramping, 3 nested aluminium pots that had a sticker on them for about $50, they went for $16, just shows how huge their markups must be.

It looks like the outdoor equipment side has gone to Kathmandu, which is strange to say the least, as Kathmandu is just primarily a not very good value for money seller of outdoor fashion wear, for people who want to make fashion statements. :) If you are into real outdoor stuff, tramping and climbing, you dont go to Kathmandu.

You'd have to see the hiking gear that Brits wear for walks in their gentle rolling "mountains" to get where Terry is coming from :D

I know what you mean :) , but I still wear wool, woollen bush shirts, 'old mens' long johns and vests, black woollen singlet, Norsewear gloves and woolly hat, etc. I do admit to having some polyprops. for lightness which is getting to be more important as time goes by :)

I was really having a bit of a dig at the way things are going, more for fashion than for practicality. Parkas have turned into 'jackets' that are specially designed so that you get wet from the waist down.

Oringi make a good long parka, but even they call it a jacket. I believe Backhouse still make real oily parkas, but probably not the long 'fishermans' version anymore.

442694 2006-04-02 02:45:00 In saw recently in a newspaper a picture of new fashion Swanndri clothing. I think there was a mini skirt and a handbag -- real agricultural stuff fro the Queen Street farmerette ;) Graham L (2)
442695 2006-04-02 02:56:00 :)
I wager this: I'll be more comfortable and happy to tramp through a Tararua snow/rain storm on the tops in my woolies than most in their fancy fashion polyprops.
