The installation couldn't be be easier, and my only complaint is that it refuses to set itself up with /home on a different HDD. One has to change that later. Mind you, like ubuntu, it's debian based, so it's built largely on a rock solid base anyway. |

| 442606 | 2006-04-02 06:56:00 | Thanks Dolby, that pretty much mirrors my experience . I hadn't looked at SUSE as it seemed a bit mainstream and I guess I was looking for something different . I think SuSE is more popular in Europe, not so much here but who really knows when you can install it and don't need to register it . Certainly under Novell it gives it a mainstream air . In terms of wireless networking and Linux, I read somewhere where hardware vendors can change chipsets on you, so a driver which works for a certain card may not work for a later (or older) version of the same card . Certain Prism chipsets work but I don't know if I have to right version of the chipset (I do have a Prism card) . When I feel motivated, I will try again . I'm playing with Linux routers at the moment (cable based!!) . I am doing this on my laptop running Windows XP and a DSE USB wireless network "dongle" . I tried to install SuSE on it but when you need to write to the MBR for booting SuSE, the IBM laptop will not have a bar of it . I ended up taking the hard drive out and installing SuSE on it and then putting it back in . |

| 442607 | 2006-04-02 07:10:00 | Ziggys just dropped ubuntu in favour of SuSE9.1, which runs fabulously on a machine he was given (less than 400 MHz, less than 256Mb RAM) He's happy with it, but i can't sat SuSE9.1 has the style of Ubuntu. SuSE comes with stock standard KDE styling, which is not a bad thing, just needs personalization. | personthingy (1670) | ||

I prefer mandriva, just seems a lot more user friendly & things just work faster with it + you can download, install & update it for free + everything except for my canon scanner works with no hassle. | Phil B (648) | ||
