444423 2006-04-09 03:36:00 One friend of mine found her power bills dropped markedly after the heat pump was installed. But she was using electric heating, (with much less comfort).

Power bill increases have to be offset by the cost of the previous heating. Wood might grow on trees, but it's not cheap. Oil and LPG are getting very expensive. Old car tyres are not allowed these days. ;)

A unit too small for the area of the house, or bad insulation, will make any heating inefficient.

That's why I got local long-time experts in to view/price/advise. Generally the discussions were interesting although occasionally a little technical and when the written quotes came in one had three pages of everything we had discussed, hand-drawn plans of the areas I wanted heating, my questions and his answers and finally recommended two options for me to choose from. Just about to trailer the last of the woodpile to a daughter whose family lives nearby. Scouse (83)
444425 2006-04-09 05:58:00 I have both a wood burner and a heat pump.
I would generate half my wood supply from wood working activity.The problem is that with these new burners you cant turn them down as much as you could on the older one and it gets too hot.
Joe mentioned ionising being expensive,I note my Panasonic has one,don't know if it costs much to have that facility.

Additionally, the contract for my recent installation included: "As the heatpump is considered to be a permanent fixture we would permanantly wire back to the fuse board and separately fuse the system. As part of the electrical installation we would also fit an isolating switch alongside the outdoor unit. On completion of the the installation the electrical contractor will issue a certificate of compliance."
As an add-on to that, on Friday last I noticed that the electrician made no attempt to go up in to the attic. Just as he was about to leave I mentioned the fuse-board clause in the contract. He said that modern units did not require that and he had simply located a three-pin outlet in the lounge adjacent to the new outside installation and connected it to that. I expressed some dissatisfaction with that but he simply loaded his gear and was gone. No cert of compliance either.
I rang the supplier, who choked a little, and said that the electrician would be back. He was. Came this morning and spent most of the morning running cable and inserting a new fuse switch in the board. I had to leave before he was finished and my wife tells me that once again he has failed to leave a cert of compliance.
I feel another phone call coming on.

The $400 or $600 ones might be OK. Check the specifications. (The Warehouse would probably be more likely to have some interest in getting units suited to NZ's climate than a supermarket, which is just buying a container load at the lowest cost.) The Warehouse sell appliances; supermarkets are food retailers. Of course, the till price isn't the end: it will cost you quite a lot to have one installed. You would need to check it all out before being carried away by the low cost. (People buy computers and computer parts cheap too: sometimes they are happy with what they get).

I purchased a Kriesler heat pump from Woolworths. It has had a problem in that the fan on the inside unit does not turn off when the pump stops. I have been overwelmed by the support both from Woolworths and from the Australian agents. I have even had a call direct from the chinese manufactuers in China! They are bending over backwards to solve my problem and have have sent replacement curcuit boards etc, which I have replaced. If the problem does not get corrected soon, the Austalian agent is going to fly over especially to investigate the problem for himself. While the unit is a cheap one and is a bit noisy, the back up service and support is top notch and I am totally impressed. I would never hesitate to purchase a similar item again from Woolworths and i wonder what the support would have been like if I had bought a warehouse unit?

Warehouse service = Horrible, none..... I bought one sometime ago, and thinking that service would be quite good as it was sporting one of those "Kiwi stickers" and that I would get good local support. But when the heat stopped flowing (which means it's basically reduced to a fan), no support at all, and that I would have to contact the manufacturers myself, which did not result in anything....

Btw.... Another good heating option that I have installed and enjoy now is underfloor heating (great if ur planning on a new or re-doing your house). It's not as warm as a heat pump, it'll maintain around 17 degrees when it's about 8 outside.. But it's cheap, and ur feet will be toasty warm....

We had a number of HP installer call in over the past few weeks, quote came in between $3.5 - 4.5K. Ive decided to wait a while as it will take weeks to install by which time it will be Spring and little need for the unit. resolved to turn on the in wall Fan heater in the mornings to take the chill of the air instead.

Nextdoors have just installed a HP, outdoor unit faces our house and its whisper quiet. He has the same prob as ourselves, a 3 story house, but he wanted to heat the basement floor and allow heat to drift up a stairwell heating the midfloor. He claims its work, but she said they now wish they had installed a split unit, one each for the basement and mid floor area.

A customer of our makes HPs with a output factor of 5, I will check this out this week and see if this correct... better that 3 : 1 ratio going on most units Ive looked at..

Could you give me the address of the Australian Kreisler agents - I am having trouble with my heatpump but cannot find anyone to write to.
