| 444172 | 2006-04-05 09:35:00 | but i doubt you will be contacted if you are just using a third party mail service such as your hosting company...People shouldn't be using SMTP servers from 3rd parties. Any correctly configured SMTP host should not allow sending of mail from machines that aren't on it's network or in it's allowed list of hosts, without authenticated SMTP (which isn't done on port 25 as a rule). Machines that allow this are considered open relays and will be blacklisted pretty much everywhere on the internet anyway. |

| 444173 | 2006-04-05 09:43:00 | Hence why there is such a thing as SMTP Authentication..... If you have mobile users that switch from network to network, you obviously dont want to have them changing smtp settings dependant on what network they are currently using... You don't really seem to have an understanding of the issue, perhaps you should do some more research... |

Which doesn't use port 25, so isn't affected, read the post. I'm well versed in this, seems you're the one that needs to engage the research... dumbass guru |

| 444175 | 2006-04-05 10:21:00 | You are referring to SMTP over SSL? Sure you can use this if you wish.. There is a number of SMTP authentication methods, SMTP Authentication DOES use port 25, and regardless of the port number, port 25 is still required to SEND the email to the remote mail server which XTRA will Block... POP before auth will suffer the same issues as above... And your answer to roaming users connecting through Xtra to send mail through there work mail server is???? The whole point of the thread was the fact that Xtra is restricting your access, not the schemantics of SMTP.. anyway... each to their own, you have your opinion, ill have mine. 1500 posts and you don't realiase that comments such as "You don't really seem to have an understanding of the issue." wont irritate someone ??? |

Not true my good man. SMTP over SSL changes the port to 465 (if my memory serves me right), just like HTTPS changes the port from 80 (http) to 443 (https). Thus SMTP over SSL should still work - if you have SMTP over SSL and SMTP plain on the same port then the poor servers going to get a bit confused as to whether it's supposed to secure the connection or not. Are you sure you're not thinking of SMTP-Auth or some other 'authenticated' means of SMTP? And your answer to roaming users connecting through Xtra to send mail through there work mail server is???? I thought he suggested changing your SMTP server so your work mail got sent through Xtra's SMTP? No connection to your work SMTP server fullstop. And this works just fine - I mean most good servers should be set to reject SMTP traffic unless it's either from the network which they serve, or is authenticated in some means (POP before SMTP, etc). I do forsee some issues once SPF is properly introduced if Xtra still force people to use their SMTP server, but that can be sussed out at a later point in time. |

PJ Poppa, they're going to filter it for everyone - which for the average home user doesn't make any difference anyway, given chances are they're already set to use Xtras SMTP server. The only people it won't be filtered for will most likely be businesses and enterprises who handle their own mail traffic and thus have a partial reason to want to use their own SMTP server(s). |

| 444179 | 2006-04-05 10:43:00 | You've made a complete mess of this . . . . SMTP Auth is not SMTP over SSL, I thought he suggested changing your SMTP server so your work mail got sent through Xtra's SMTP? No connection to your work SMTP server fullstop . And this works just fine - I mean most good servers should be set to reject SMTP traffic unless it's either from the network which they serve, or is authenticated in some means (POP before SMTP, etc) . Yes, SMTP-Auth is what is used . . . regardless . . your understanding is limited and flawed . . go read a book or something . . |
