2008-08-07 06:40:00 | I was just wondering if anyone could tell me how to make a free website. I will eventually pay for a website, but that is a few years away when I get my bachelors in applied information systems. I saw a program called Silverstripe on this website and wondered if that was free as well. And when I say free, I mean pay for nothing, eg. domain name. Any help wanted, Thanks. | Craig Mellor (13762) | |
2008-08-07 07:03:00 | You can make a website for free yes silverstripe will do it for free it is on the cover disk this month from memory. But I don't think you can get free hosting anywhere | gary67 (56) | |

Likewise, proper hosting (without ads) is cheap too - several PF1 members are offering it. |

2008-08-07 09:07:00 | You can start easily with a web editor like front page 2000 or the popular free NVU ( . nvu . com/) . Then maybe start by signing up with a free host, e . g . Netfirms Basic from netfirms (http://www . netfirms . com/" target="_blank">www . nvu . com/) . Then maybe start by signing up with a free host, e . g . Netfirms Basic from netfirms (http:) or the popular 110mb ( . 110mb . com/) Many free hosts have their own free web editors . Database of free hosting at free-hosting com (http://www . absolutely-free-hosting . com/" target="_blank">www . 110mb . com/) Many free hosts have their own free web editors . Database of free hosting at free-hosting com (http:) and the top 20 free hosts ( . free-webhosts . com/user_reviews . php" target="_blank">www . free-webhosts . com)(supposedly) with user ratings and reviews . . . Perhaps download and use a free template from one of many templates web sites, e . g . steve's templates ( . steves-templates . com/) then up load your site to your free host (use a free FTP program to upload your site - e . g . core lite FTP (http://www . coreftp . com/" target="_blank">www . steves-templates . com/) then up load your site to your free host (use a free FTP program to upload your site - e . g . core lite FTP (http:)) . Then you can optimize for search engines, directories, etc, if you want . I use the free host, Netfirms in the USA, but their are restrictions, e . g . bandwidth, file upload size, file space size, no direct links to flash sites, etc, but has worked ok for me . Many free hosts require their company name to be added to your URL as a sub domain,(e . g . my site . their sub domain . com) and you may have to add one of their ads (link or banner) to your site . You could start with a blog as well, e . g . try the Googles blogger or the advanced wordpress (which you can add plugins for enhancement), or use the simple Google Page Creator (You need a Gmail account) - easy to set up for a beginner . Later on though, it might pay to learn html/JavaScript/PHP etc, which allows more flexibility to design and modify your web site . Then maybe upgrade to a paid host and domain, which will possibly yield more features (scripting features, higher bandwidth, increased storage space, email accounts, etc) and more ownership of your site . . .

2008-08-07 09:16:00 | As a ballpark figure what would a site the size of this cost to host per month? | B.M. (505) | |
2008-08-07 09:25:00 | As a ballpark figure what would a site the size of this cost to host per month? Many PF1 members are using Dreamhost, which costs around NZ$10/month for very generous disk space, transfer, and so on. This would be more than enough for any personal website, and would suffice for any small-medium sided website.
