695090 2008-08-05 10:46:00 Client's PC randomly reboots - sometimes when coming out of standby and sometimes during a long idle period.

Also sometimes turns on by itself occasionally.

How can I stop it? They are trying to run it as a file/print server but it keeps rebooting when it comes out of standby.

"Wake on PCI card" is enabled in bios.

Pentium III 870MHz
512MB RAM (PC133)
Win XP SP3 (was 2000 Pro SP4 - had same prob)

PS Is there a way to see what time it boots up/restarts - to see if they are happening after a similar period of time or randomly...

695091 2008-08-05 10:50:00 Check the BIOS and see if wake on LAN or wake on Ring is enabled, that can cause random boots when turned off or asleep. wainuitech (129)
695092 2008-08-05 10:53:00 "Power On By ring" is disabled
"Resume by Alarm" is disabled
Have disabled "Wake up on PCI Card" - NIC is in an expansion slot

Will unplugging network cable make any diff?

695093 2008-08-05 11:19:00 Unplugging the Ethernet cable would eliminate a LAN packet/ signal waking the PC, as it wouldn't be able to bet through.

To check on the reboot times, open event viewer, click start/run type in eventvwr press enter, look at the system logs, there you should see a normal time of no activity, then a time when something happened, see the example Here (www.imagef1.net.nz) last activity last night at 10.34 pm, then start up this morning at 7.38am.

Your log may give some clues as to whats happening.

They are trying to run it as a file/print server but it keeps rebooting when it comes out of standby. Why have it in standby, a server can run 24/7 - simply turn off the monitor and leave it running, my two servers are never turned off, or on standby.

What could be happening is something could be sending a signal to wake / check the PC, on the odd time here, totally random, even with all the PC's inside turned off, one of my laser printers does what sounds like a reset, or for the lack of better explanation, a recycle, as if the router is checking to make sure its still there. (hope that makes sense) Sounds exactly the same as when you first hit print - bit hard to explain.

695095 2008-08-06 02:27:00 Could be a bios prob

If XP is up to date
