446626 2006-04-16 01:16:00 I read with interest in Google News, Sci/Tech section under the headline : Google Calendar, Be afraid Microsoft, be very afraid: that the competition to "Replace" windows for something else is hotting up.
Even if nothing seriously comes of it, it cannot hurt to shake up Microsoft. At the moment the Google Windows is only a collection of bits & pieces. I guess, I don't really know, that Windows has grown like that also.
Any comments. PJ

Very interesting - how far away is a web enabled office (for want of a better word) suite? It seems a bit patchy at the moment but if they could introduce a fast, stable and secure product then there's a software solution for a mobile work / play force, irrespective of OS. Interesting...although I am a little (just a little) sceptical that such software would remain free / funded by advertising.

Just my thoughts

446628 2006-04-16 03:12:00 Andrew................Yes thats the one. There are enough Freeware programs around, that given a bit of Google money & expertise, that could be put together into something that would work. As to remaining Free? Well only time will tell. In any case it has to be worrying Microsoft. Which is not a bad thing !!! PJ

ps If only there was a "Google" to challenge Telecom, now that would be worth seeing !!!!! pj

446629 2006-04-16 03:25:00 I can see the benefits of have a web-based calander, but im getting sick of hearing about google and other companies offering web-based programs. Why would we want to open up a WEB BROWSER to type up a document, edit our home movies, play Farcry? I just don't see the point and reasoning behind it. imarubberducky (7230)

I think the appeal with ASP is the multi-platform - the operating system becomes irrelevant given everything is done through the browser. Plus piracy would become a thing of the past, version control is no longer an issue and no more software installation / driver issues. However, there is still the 'big brother' element (as in George Orwell's 1984, not the crapola TV show) and the issue for Kiwi users will be bandwidth limitations and data caps, so I believe it is merely 'hot air' for us until some of these issues are resolved.

P.S. And if we take your point further PJ about other freeware programmes, MS only needs to worry if there is a coordinated approach from its competitors - much like Telecom has nothing to worry about while its competitors don't band together(i.e. Xtra, tolls, mobile & data services).

446631 2006-04-16 04:45:00 I think one day we won't have a desktop as such and everything will be run within the
web browser. So you will have an online office program, online Calander, online Photo editing etc. All programs and file on your Computer will be run from the browser.

I see it as competition. Anything to make MS "Do Better". PJ

446634 2006-04-16 06:14:00 Sounds worse then terrible, Good way to congest the internet for no good reason, charge like a wounded bull, put everyones info at risk, and slow productivty to a crawl.

I cant think of a single good reason to make everyones comp a dumb terminal and have the data being used sent off to god knows where.

Though MS have ben talking up the concept of it for a couple of years...F'n idiots. Its as stupid an idea as any I have ever heard.

I agree .

There's no way I would ever use anything web based like that . When the data is on my hard drive I am in total control of who sees it . Creating and editing data on the internet means there is no guarantee that my documents remain private no matter how much reassurance they may give .

Stuff that .
