2006-04-10 07:58:00 | It looks like ISPs can't tidy up all the loose ends for you anymore. Xnet said that I will have to call Orcon myself & get my account cancelled where as in the past, the new ISP took care of all that. I think that probably has something to do with Xtra stealing customers by telling the other ISPs that their customers have switched to Xtra when the customers had done no such thing.

2006-04-10 08:25:00 | Given that Telecom has warned ISPs about doing that www.telecom.co.nz What evidence if any do you have? Could it be Xnet can't be bothered?

It should be the end users responsibility to contact the ISP they are leaving and request service cancellation. The ISP you are moving to shouldn't do it for you. What if you wanted to keep your e-mail address, or had a domain name and business website attached to it etc? The article PaulD refers to has no relevance here. |

2006-04-11 02:04:00 | Here is a relevant story from Consumer: Disconnect yourself 2-Dec-2005 Would you pay Telecom $4.95 a month for a service it won't let you use? You may be doing that right now. Alan from Dunedin signed up for Telecom's Anytime plan. For a monthly fee of $4.95 he got discounts on standard calling rates for national, home to mobile and peak-time international calls. But last March he found a more attractive deal with Simply Calling and chose it as his toll-call provider. Simply Calling says it is easy to switch. "We just need your Telecom account details and we will do the rest." Simply Calling told Telecom that Alan's toll account was being switched over and all of Alan's toll calls then went through Simply Calling. Anytime terms and conditions say you must use Telecom for all your long-distance calls. So Alan was unable to use Anytime and another toll provider. But although Telecom would no longer make Anytime available to Alan, it kept collecting Anytime fees. This went on for eight months before Alan checked his Telecom bill. He asked for a refund, but Telecom refused, saying it was Alan's responsibility to tell them he had changed toll provider. After Consumer put his case to Telecom, Alan received a "goodwill credit". Telecom said, "This customer is not due a refund. However, now that the customer has pursued the issue further, we have said we would consider looking at a goodwill credit for any frustration which might have been caused. We would like to offer one month's free line rental at the value of $39.95." Simply Calling told us it doesn't have authority to disconnect its customers from Anytime or any other Telecom services. It will now make sure new customers are reminded to disconnect themselves if they want to leave another telecommunications company. Our advice * Don't trust the various telecommunication providers to act in your best interest - that's your responsibility. * If you change providers, be sure you tell your former provider in writing. * Always check your bills before you pay them - don't wait eight months! * And don't give up if you don't get satisfaction. As Alan has proven, persistence can pay.

2006-04-11 07:23:00 | XNET has to do it for you.... its all advertised on their website...so they cannot say they cant do it... I'm requesting connection with xnet and they're gonna sort out telecom for me :D would be fun 2 see if they do it for me.. their website says they would srot it out for you, but a charge of $41....but thats not bad considering you save on the connection fee and all the hassle if you've had to do it yourself...hmm i just re-readed it, maybe i'm wrong...but then why charge a churn fee? isnt that for them 2 disconnect you from other provider? or is it for some profit making scheme coz the connection is free?? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ taken from xnet website~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Free provisioning until 21st of May 2006 (normally $99 for new connections) and does not include house wiring or a modem. A churn fee of $41 is applicable when joining from another provider. Connection and Wiring costs $149 (normally $248) and a technician will visit your house. This is normally only necessary if you have a monitored house alarm or 5 or more active phone jacks.
