446980 2006-04-21 04:05:00 . . and to quote Orson Welles on his deathbed after years of debauchery, womanizing, recreational drugs and alcohol . . . . . . . "Ah! Now comes the great mystery!"

Hopefully all are able to make the same sarcastic remark . . . someday .

However, quoting people who have had their individual gods die on them is not a fitting argument against the Bible .

It's the KIngdom! The Kingdom and all we suffer and do to ourselves is during a lengthy legal battle over supremacy of the universe . The theme is simple . . the scriptures are simple and the truth is simple . . . but narrow and cramped (to quote a scripture here) is the way to life; most are not following it and most will not arrive there .

End of lecture and end of thread for me .

446981 2006-04-21 12:40:00 how are we going to prove/disprove the existence of a being who's only claimed action was that of creation only mentioned in the corrupted bible, which is pretty much completely proved false by bigbang/evolution which DOES HAVE SOLID, PHYSICAL PROOF .

why would a god leave all this evidence of his non-existence?

I'm not quite clear why you think the Big Bang is evidence of the non-existence of God? Where did the Alpha Point (Big Bang) come from itself? And evolution is perfectly compatible with any religion if we ignore the small noisy Creationist crowd .

well big bang theory contradicts the first few opening passages of the bible, the bible being the only artifact claimed be be His word (also admittedly heavily modified by variuos churches)

446983 2006-04-22 08:27:00 The early passages about Creation etc in the Bible are metaphors . They are not literally true . They were written for simple ancient people to provide a mental picture of how the world came into being . Noone knew of evolution, let alone quantum physics 4000 years ago .

The reality is that Earth is about 4 . 5 billion years old and the Universe about 14 billion years .

The only people who have difficulty with this is christian creationists . In my opinion they do a great deal of harm to scientific learning .

agreed, exactly, but if anything in the bible that doesnt fit is a metaphor, what isnt? i think its stupid how every time the bible is proved wrong, it get interpreted differently . . .

Sigh . . .

It's all irrelevant anyway . The Bible had to wait until 1456 to be printed, and up until then every copy was transcribed by hand . Like 'chinese whispers', each version was different and subject to the interpretations and imaginations of the translators and copiers . Fourteen hundred years is a long time to wait before you could get a standardised version of the Word .

Then there were the wholesale revisions that gave us the King James version (translated from Latin around 1600) and a few others besides, so what we have now is more like the word of Tod, or Bob (or any of the other translators who had a hand in it) therefore taking any serious meanings out of it at all is a very risky business . And then there are the "Bibles" used by all the other faiths, some of which have remarkably parallel tales to tell .

In reality you only need three words to keep you on track: Do unto others . If you treat people the way you would like to be treated youself, you can't go wrong in this world .

Sado-masochists excepted .

446987 2006-04-22 13:03:00 No wonder my Father used to tell me that the best way to kill a dinner party, or any other amicable group meeting, was to discuss religion or politics!!

We all have our own beliefs (or lack, thereof) . As has been said, if the cause of so many wars wasn't religion or some sectual belief, then it would be something else .

the truth being what? that is the crux of the matter

do unto others, you dont need a bible to figure that one out
