695508 2008-08-07 02:26:00 Hi,

A mate loaned me his 750gb external to put some stuff on. The thing wouldn't go so I opened it to see if I could find the problem... I didn't notice the warranty void stick however...

It shows no lights, makes no noise or anything. The external power supply has been tested and it is dishing out a stable 12VDC. What could be the problem? I am wanting to fix it myself if I can....

And yes I know I shouldn't of opened it!

Thanks!

695509 2008-08-07 02:32:00 HOW is it connected?? USB/Firewire/Ethernet if it has this. Speedy Gonzales (78)
695510 2008-08-07 02:33:00 USB 2.0 - no other connectors that I am aware of. NZLcyclist (329)
695511 2008-08-07 02:33:00 And what are you using? XP? Vista? Other?

Is the USB 2 onboard / a card ? Does the BIOS see it?

695512 2008-08-07 02:34:00 What type of Drive is it IDE or SATA, are you able to connect it directly to your computer? stormdragon (6013)
695513 2008-08-07 02:39:00 THe Drive is a SATA. It has some tinfoil tape inside over the drive and onto part of the case, I don't really want to fiddle with that. Warranty would most definitely be stuffed if I do that.

I have tried it on both a VISTA and XP machines, both with motherboard based onboard USB ports.

The drive appears to not get any power what so ever.

695514 2008-08-07 02:43:00 If the mobo has SATA, connect it to a header.

You'll need both cables (power/data). See if it gets detected

Is there anything on it?

Has it ever been formatted? If not, you may have to format it first in disk management

695515 2008-08-07 02:45:00 I do not want to remove the drive as it will damage the tinfoil tape.

There is nothing on the drive, it will not even spin up or show lights on the case.

The actual drive inside is a Seagate 750gb SATA

695516 2008-08-07 02:47:00 Well if there is nothing on it it probably hasnt been formatted

In XP go to control panel / admin tools / computer management / disk management

See if it appears here. If it does format it

Then you'll see it

695517 2008-08-07 02:52:00 the drive is NOT spinning.

I have looked at the Disk management in both XP and Vista and it does not show. I understand that the disk must be spinning and working (in some state) for it to show?
