695416 2008-08-06 09:59:00 i turned my laptop on this evening and noticed it took 10 minutes or more to get to the windows desktop, then another 20 for the start menu to actually be useable. Opening mozilla takes ten seconds minimum, and i would hate to think how long outlook takes. Looking at the task manager, nothing is hogging the CPU and i hav 504MB RAM total, which has been fine in the past (may need an upgrade but its not necessary now). I was thinking maybe its the AV, Computer Associates eTrust, but then again it only uses 64mb ram, Avast needed more and worked fine. Typing this on the laptop is almost painful. Any ideas? aidanmaz (7180)
695417 2008-08-06 10:08:00 How many security suites do you have on there? You should only have one - remove all but Avast.

Open Task Mgr - Performance tab - how much RAM is remaining?

Are you on Vista or XP??

Have you run any AV scans lately? Also can you post a HiJackThis log please??

Is a network cable/wireless card connected? If any one of those arte plugged into my laptop it adds 5 min to the startup time, yet if I plug them in after login, it takes 10 secs to connect!

695419 2008-08-06 10:31:00 OK... looks clean to me, but wait for another opinion :)

Try removing eTrust and in it's place install the 30 day trial of Eset Nod32 antivirus (www.eset.com) and run a scan.

Afterwards, install Avast (or eTrust if you paid for it).

695420 2008-08-06 10:54:00 Shut it down, wait 10 secs and then turn it back on again. See if it returns to normal boot up and use speed. Jen (38)
695421 2008-08-06 22:43:00 done all of that, even taken AV off, the icons on the taskbar dont appear, though the start button does. and when i double click Mozilla Firefox both the firefox icon and the My computer icon disappear for a few seconds. Its odd aidanmaz (7180)
695422 2008-08-06 22:55:00 Try creating a text file and see if saves to the hard drive quickly, maybe the HDD is failing and the PC is struggling to read the disk? SolMiester (139)
