445296 2006-04-10 01:22:00 This isn't a problem, but an anomoly I don't understand...

My regular email account @mydomain was down for a while so I set up POP access for my Gmail account. It worked great.

Then after I got my regular account back up I was able to successfully send and receive email via my proper account, BUT... it was using my Gmail smtp settings!!! How could that have worked?

I've since gone into my mail preferences and re-set my default smtp server to Xtra, and things are fine.

Greg = *confused* :confused:

It's no wonder people find it hard to believe I used to work on an ISP's helpdesk! :eek: :D

(Using Mozilla Mail 1.7.12 on XP Pro SP1)

445297 2006-04-10 01:52:00 You can send mail via SMTP to any mail server you like (although unless it is authenicated SMTP, most will only accept messages from select IP Addresses, i.e. to send mail via Xtra's SMTP server you have to dial in using Xtra or be on Xtra ADSL).

SMTP is ongoing only to clients, so I imagine you were using POP or IMAP for receiving mail (which is a separate setting in Mozilla Mail)..

That really confused me when I first started using thunderbird. I was used to smtp settings being tied to one account & displaying underneath or in a tab next to the pop3 settings.

Not that hard to believe, knowledge of anything to do with computers isn't a requirement to work for an ISP. At least in my experience of help desks, anyway.
