696053 2008-08-09 03:37:00 Hi all
I’m having problems playing DVDs on my desktop PC (running XP with Windows Media Player as my default player although I have Media Player Classic on board as well) . All CDs play, no problems there .

However, some DVDs do play ( a couple of local productions, some DVDs from magazines although some of those are very slow to get started) but some just won’t play at all (DVDs from the video shop, musical production DVDs borrowed from friends) . However, these ALL play in my laptop (also running XP) but, of course, the sound isn’t so good on that .

So, investigating what the difference is, I find that the PC is set at DVD region/zone 1 (Canada, USA, etc) and laptop is set at region/zone 4 (Oceania, C & South America) . Now, that makes sense because that’s where we are .

I thought the solution would be to change the region/zone on the PC to Region 4 . However, the system won’t let me do that, coming up with the following message – “Unable to update region setting . Please make sure the drive contains a region 4 media and you have administration privileges” .

I know about the limit to the number of changes and still have 4 showing to be available . I am the only person using the machine (sadly, no one else to blame!) and have admin rights .

But is there something I’ve missed? Can anyone suggest something else I need to check / uncheck? If I’m correct in thinking I need to change the zone, how do I do it? Any other solutions? Any bright ideas, anyone?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really want to enjoy some of this music . Thanks .

696055 2008-08-09 06:57:00 Thanks PPp - that instruction takes me where I've been trying to change the settings and that's where I get the "Unable to update . . . " message previously mentioned . But I appreciate your reply .

Still hoping . . .

696056 2008-08-10 09:34:00 Well I guess you can call your manufacturer, or as an alternative find a "Region Free" patch or substitute firmware. Sorry have no practical experience of either. PPp (9511)
696057 2008-08-10 09:39:00 If you use VideoLAN (http://www.videolan.org/) to play DVDs, it ignores the region setting of the drive. Pretty neat :) davehartley (3487)
696058 2008-08-10 09:47:00 Ah! Thats why I have no problems!!! PPp (9511)
696059 2008-08-11 06:00:00 You can also crack region protection, its got no legal basis, and who cares if your DVD is from France, you bought it!

EDIT: Someone already suggested cracking it, if you want, I have clear instructions on my PC somewhere :)

SPARTAN - thanks, I'd like to have those instructions. (Whether I understand them or not is another matter) Can you post them here or do you want to send them to < advena@gmx.com >

Thanks for your help.
