| 447689 | 2006-04-19 20:48:00 | When changing ISPs we lose our old email address(es). Is there a way to keep the old address active? I seem to recall someone here on PF1 saying if you buy a domain name the old address can be redirected to wherever you specify. If this is the case, what exactly is a "domain name" and what would be the cheapest option to set this up here in NZ? FWIY, my question is not for my email address but for my wife's address (we are with the same ISP) . She has business cards, posters, adverts, CDs and web sites with her current email address. Last year I set up a GMail account for her and explained that she should use it from now on since some day we would probably change ISPs but this advice went in one ear and out the other :( . Now that we are looking at broadband, changing to another ISP could mean her many business contacts will not be able to email her. What to do?? BTW, I had a small local ISP about 8 years ago and they automatically redirected emails to my new ISP email address, as long as I had $$ in my user-pays-for-data-only account. I don't think ISPs will do this sort of thing any more... |

The cheapest option would be to keep paying for just a mailbox at the old ISP and redirect that to your new address. |

The process I have referred to in the past is buying your own domain name (~US$10 per year) and a cheap hosting account (~US$20-30) . By doing this, your email is totally isolated from your ISP and you can change email providers as you wish without having to change your email address . GoDaddy ( . godaddy . com) is popular for domains and there is a good list of hosts here (http://www . weblist . co . nz/webhosting . php" target="_blank">www . godaddy . com) is popular for domains and there is a good list of hosts here (http:) (remember that for email you won't go through all that much space or bandwidth . 100MB of space and 2GB transfer would most likely cover your needs) . It's also good to have your own domain for small businesses anyway as it reflects your business instead of give your ISP free advertising . :) Changing email addresses is a pain, but it is by no means impossible . Just let all your contacts know about the change a month or so before you switch ISPs . At least with your own domain name you won't have to do it again unless you change the name of your business etc . |

| 447694 | 2006-04-20 08:41:00 | Stu - we are with Paradise. Mac - thanks for the explanation. I think a cheaper and easier option is to get a virtual account such as GMail, which in theory should never change and will always be there; GMail also has the great option of having all emails forwarded to any other address. Paul - I don't think it is the cheapest option. To keep paying $15 a month seems a waste, but OK, for a month or two may be alright. I was hoping for a domain name for around $25 a year (that would redirect the old email address). |

| 447696 | 2006-04-20 10:26:00 | Stu - we are with Paradise . Paradise offer broadband, why cant you stick with them? Or how about sticking with Paradise with broadband for a few months, & getting a . nz domain name & changing your e-mail address from Paradise to your domain name slowly over a few months, then once every one has your domain name e-mail address, switch ISPs? & then keeping your Paradise account for a month or so to make sure no one e-mails you at that address? I Hope this helps :) |

Sorry, was assuming Xtra at $2.81 per month for a mailbox would have been matched by the "competition". Don't forget that a Domain is only part of the solution, you either have to run your own mail server or pay someone else to do that. |

| 447698 | 2006-04-20 12:12:00 | i shifted to ihug late last year, what a move, screw xtra, im not paying an extra $30 for a worse plan, 2mbit with a 20gb cap for $49.95 a month. i really dont care if xtra put their speed up to 3.5mbit, im not paying 2/3rds more. and the ironic thing is that xtra wholesale the same broadband to ihug. we approached telecom and said, will you match the deal. nup. oh well. looks like our 2k or so yearly bill along with my fathers 10k annual business account goes to the cheaper opposition. and i have had no problems. so up yours theresa! | Tux (606) | ||
