447620 2006-04-19 09:29:00 Bought my wife a new Dell (she's had 3 Dells before this, all trouble-free) and we spent Easter configuring it.
Then we took it to her office and fired it up.
The fan started spinning faster and faster and eventually was screaming like jet plane.
Then everything cut out.
We tried again and this time the opening screen said there had been a temperature event previously and the system had automatically shut down. Did we want to continue? Before we had a chance to answer, the same thing happened, with the fan reaching a crescendo before everything shut down.
When we looked inside (there's a smart way of doing that on new Dells without using a screwdriver) we found the heat sink sitting at the bottom of the case. It had never been screwed in!!!
That's terrible QC, isn't it?

BUT, within 24 hours a service man came and fixed it and thoroughly checked evey component in the machine, so we're happy.

Conclusion?
Mistakes happen, but in this case Dell did everything it could to fix our problem promptly.
So, overall, we're happy.
Mind you, I personally would never buy a Dell.

447622 2006-04-19 10:45:00 I would imagine the vast majority of customers have no problems. Metla (12)
447623 2006-04-19 10:55:00 talking of bad QC, a lot (prob most) electronics is never fully tested before going out the door. i had a stero once that had the mains wiring back to front. fortunatly it just didn't go and nothing nasty happened. tweak'e (69)
447624 2006-04-19 11:09:00 heh this was something i came across with a few pc co & pc direct machines a few years ago - hs & fan not on the cpu quarry (252)
447625 2006-04-19 12:52:00 Heh, I've had quite a few PCs delivered to work with:

1) A CD-ROM drive just banging around the bottom of a tower case.
2) The processor speed incorrectly set in the bios - as in heavily underclocked.
3) Hard drives not plugged in.
4) Floppy disk drives where the cable was reversed.
5) RAM Modules floating around the case.
6) Heat sink placed on the wrong way (and so huge air gap).
7) Every other sort of power lead apart from one with a AUS/NZ plug.
8) USB ports typically the front ones, wired up incorrectly.
9) Packaging that looked like a forklift had gone through it.
10) PCs that have an incorrect Mac Address due to abad bios update.

and of course, PCs that are just dead on arrival (bad PSU or Mobo).
What is even funnier is that often on invoices there is a charge for "quality testing".

Ah to be fair, the must use the couriers from hell. But still - who the hell stole the two optical mice from the "factory sealed package" :2cents:
