449213 2006-04-25 22:12:00 Anzac Day - what is it today? It seems to me that there are 3 groups that have an interest in it.

The veterans themselves who want/need to preserve the memories of comrades, those still alive, those who have died and those that never returned from conflict. For them the RSA continues to hold the key to this preservation of memories.

Those that are/have been affected by parents or offspring who never returned or returned with disabilities or other lasting effects from conflict. I count myself in this group having lost a grandfather in WW1 and a father in WW2. For this group the memories are mainly the absence of memories. The RSA has mainly failed this group in spite of their protestations otherwise.

Those who fortunately came along without the scars of war but who seek to discover why earlier generations have a need to remember and hopefully gain something from that. The RSA has no relevance to this group.

We must be nearly at the crossroads where an organisation such as the RSA has a declining interest and relevance in the continuing observation of one of our National Days and we should review how we honour our predecessors who helped to form the modern day NZ

Just a thought.

Did you go to a parade by chance?

Still am anti war, but realise that with out the soldiers who went to war, we would not be where we are today...... they went because it was expected for us to save these other people from suffering....?

But where does this line finish? what does this mean to those who were involved in the recent wars? Iraq, Faulklands, etc.....
Does ANZAC really mean involved the past only or all wars? and those we lost? (people)

If in years to come we have had a major war somewhere in the world.....will this be then covered in this ANZAC type thing?

no offence intended............just musing on things i have been discussing with someone today.

beetle

No I didn't- my experiences have turned me totally anti war hence my dislike of the RSA and their continuing pro-war stance, I honour the past in private .

No problem about continuing to honour those that make a commitment to preserving our way of life . Though hopefully there wont be any more wars that may require people make the sort of sacrifices that others have made in the past . my views are a reflection on where we are today, and a note that we might need to review how we honour sacrifices in the future .
Could have said that better but you probably get the drift .
