447699 2006-04-20 18:41:00 Paradise offer broadband, why can’t you stick with them?

Naturally Paradise was the first option I looked at bu their plans suck. Actually it is with Telstra Clear, the mother company of Paradise.

Paul and Tux - Wow, that is cheap. Never knew that was an option so will check with Paradise if they have the same.

There is another problem I have thought of, regarding broadband in our house: How do I get my wife's laptop connected? It will not have the ADSL modem, so I guess that means I have to put a wireless (bluetooth? not up to par in this field) thing on my PC, but then that means my desktop PC has to be switched on for her to use the Net. Her laptop is supposed to have wireless, BTW. Its complications like this that make me wonder if I should just stay on dialup...

Get an external adsl modem with a network hub and you can plug any of your computers in to it (most hubs allow between 5 - 10 computers to plug in at any one time), and they will then all have network access,
Do you need wireless? most if not all laptops come with a network port so with a bit of network cable you should be able to just connect straight into the hub from the lappie

447701 2006-04-20 21:00:00 Thanks Nigel. It would be best to have wireless. It is my wife's laptop and if she would like the freedom of having her laptop anywhere in the house, without internet wires. It should also mean that she can print directly from her laptop rather than asking me to transfer files to my desktop and then printing.

I assume that any external modem (as supplied by ISPs such as iHug) would have a socket where a wireless thingie (bluetooth adapter?) could be plugged in. Will have to ask the ISP if this is so.

447702 2006-04-20 22:15:00 Steve, its not Bluetooth.

Its WiFi, and entirely different beast.

I have an ADSL router (modem) here, connected to a multi-port hub, one port goes to a Wireless Airpoint, meaning (in theory) my laptop works anywhere in the house. Range available on wireless is likely to disappoint however, it works OK here but more than 1 room away it starts to fail.

ADSL modem/routers are widely available with WiFi built in.

447703 2006-04-20 22:23:00 Sorry, was assuming Xtra at $2.81 per month for a mailbox would have been matched by the "competition". Don't forget that a Domain is only part of the solution, you either have to run your own mail server or pay someone else to do that.Steve mentioned that he was planning on using GMail, but even if he was using a shared hosting account he wouldn't have to worry about how the system worked, only that as long as he paid his US$20-30 per year it would.

Will have to ask the ISP if this is so.A few years ago when we got ADSL, the modems ihug were offering didn't have an ethernet jack so make sure the ones that they sell now do or buy your own elsewhere. All you need to do is plug an ADSL modem (I'm using a D-Link 302G) into an 802.11b/g wireless base station (I'm using an Airport Express base station) and put a wireless networking card in each of your computers if they don't already have one built in. :)
