696334 2008-08-10 11:25:00 I have been given a 2.5" laptop drive in an external enclosure to look at that has been dropped - it contains highly valuable data (not backed up by the owner) that now seemingly can't be retrieved.

The drive shows as a drive under both 'My Computer' and 'Disk Management' but when you try to access it via either:

Right click and open under Disc Management
Double clicking the drive icon under 'My Computer'

you get the message "The disk in Drive P is not formatted. Do You want to Format it Now?"

Obviously I dont want to do this as this will definitely wipe all the data on the drive.
Are there any other ways of accessing the drive's data short of sending it away to a data recovery specialist or utilising data recovery software which
is also pricey and invaraibly never works as well as it promises to!

Thanks in advance

Paul

696335 2008-08-10 11:32:00 It may be suffering from some physical damage. If so software will not help this not matter how much it costs or how good the reviews are.

It's really not easy to fix a broken HDD. Your best bet would be to send it away, that is if the data is valuable enough.

However, in my experiences most people can find the time to download *new* 'valuable information'.

If I remember correct, Auckland and Chch both have very reliable data recovery services. I can't recall the names of either, but should be able to be found quickly via google.
