448661 2006-04-23 02:32:00 I've been searching for a way to make my DVD drive region free, and as I've found out this either requires changing the firmware, or some kind of software solution .

I found the perfect software solution!

But . . . (isn't there always a but?) It seems that the software (DVDSynth) is no longer available, or has been 'banned' .

AnnaBlack writes "DVDSynth is a (currently prerelease) low-level driver tool that can sit between your physical DVD drive and any software that accesses it . So far so what, but the extremely clever thing about this is that it can filter the DVD data on the fly . The example applications included currently allow new subtitle sets to be provided for existing films (which could spawn a whole new activity for movie buffs!) but also a very neat little filter that will remove region codes on the fly from any DVD you play . Supplied with full sourcecode and programmers documentation . " Wonder how long before this is contraband code like DeCSS .

BUT (yes there is another but!) it seems the source code is still available .

But . . . (yes again) I have no way to compile the code or know if the code is actually the source of DVDSynth .

So . . . this ( . nu/banned/DVDSynth/" target="_blank">pied . nu) is the link to the source, can anyone help me out?

448664 2006-04-23 04:43:00 I have VLC, I think the difference with this software is that it works with any dvd writing / playing software . So it acts as an intermediary between the dvd drive and any software that uses it . I think .

So, I could use programs like DVD Shrink, without having to set a dvd region .

I think .

Does DVD Virtual CloneDrive do the same kind of thing?

Reminds me to make several archive copies of DVD Shrink and sent them to friends as seeds and to myself as back-ups . . . .
