| 696701 | 2008-08-12 05:06:00 | Trying to repair this Acer laptop running Win XP Pro. Could not start Windows with errors saying that some sytem files are missing. Recommeded to repair by running set up from CD. Am now in the Repair mode screen. How do I run the system file check and copy those missing files? Used to run sfc /scannow to repair missing files. Boot from the XP CD, hit any key when prompted, Press R to enter recovery mode, once booted you should have 1:C:\Windows and asking what to boot, type in 1, press Enter, At the administrator password leave blank , (unless you have put in a admin password in the past), and hit Enter. At the command prompt C:\Windows type in chkdsk /r, Press enter, that will check the system files. The F switch would be better, but that doesn't work on the CD recovery Console. If you need to copy certain files, as long as you know what they are called and where they have to go they can be copied from the CD. |

| 696705 | 2008-08-12 06:32:00 | Recommeded to repair by running set up from CD has nothing to do with running from 'recovery console' which from your description is where you are.... boot from the cd and then instead of pressing R for at the prompt to 'repair' xp, which takes you to the recovery console press enter to goto windows install screens.........that *should* give you the option of 'repairing' the installation. This'll install xp 'over the top' of the existing installation......you will not 'lose' any programs or user files etc.......it's also known as a 'backdoor' install........ |
