| 450246 | 2006-04-28 07:28:00 | From: www.ispanz.org.nz 27 April 2006 A group of Kiwi Internet providers say that despite an extensive marketing campaign advertising faster broadband for New Zealanders, Telecom has not only failed to deliver on this promise, but have actually made the average speed of broadband worse for many customers. Members of the Internet Service Providers Association of New Zealand (ISPANZ) have noticed a steady increase in the number of customer complaining that their broadband service does not come close to meeting the maximum line speeds promoted by Telecom. "Volumes of customer complaints about speed are compounding and many customers are simply not getting acceptable performance from their Telecom UBS-based service." says ISPANZ President David Diprose. Diprose says that ISPANZ members have never been happy with the performance of Telecom's broadband at busy times, with many customers experiencing speeds that at busy times are worse than dial-up. This is because Telecom's broadband is only a "best efforts" service, with the marketed speeds only available when the network is not busy. The backhaul capacity allocated by Telecom from each DSLAM is shared between all customers, wholesale and retail. But the problem has now become completely unacceptable. The amount of capacity allocated to each customer by Telecom used to be 24kbps, but now Telecom are refusing to state any number, saying simply that "all customers receive a minimum throughput reflecting the best efforts nature of the service". "No Telecom ADSL customer, either retail or wholesale, is getting anything like the speed they might think they are paying for, except perhaps in the early hours of the morning, and then only if they're lucky. We are effectively in a monopoly situation with only one Telco having any control over this" continued Diprose. "Telecom's approach to broadband is like the NZ Police forcing all drivers to only use first gear whenever other drivers are sharing the road". ISPANZ members are asking Telecom to address the deteriorating broadband performance levels for all customers. Diprose says that a solution to this growing problem must be included in the outcome Government's broadband stock-take, expected to be announced within the next 2 months. |

My net was all fine till they rolled out the 3.5mbit plans. but despite the 1mbit speed i got: Pinging ihug.co.nz [203.109.252.75] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 203.109.252.75: bytes=32 time=1143ms TTL=60 Reply from 203.109.252.75: bytes=32 time=906ms TTL=60 Reply from 203.109.252.75: bytes=32 time=1138ms TTL=60 Reply from 203.109.252.75: bytes=32 time=1285ms TTL=60 Ping statistics for 203.109.252.75: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 906ms, Maximum = 1285ms, Average = 1118ms That's my ISP for crying out loud! google was 1600ms! and this is before 10am on a sunday with noone downloading or uploading. I am literally ready to scream.... the latency is making things time out, our "normal" speeds make me go crazy (20mins to upload a few html files to a website?!) aaaaaaaaaahhhhh |

| 450254 | 2006-04-30 00:02:00 | I suppose those of us who are getting good speeds should be keeping our fingers crossed, just got this from Xtra speed test: "Your line speed is approximately 3309.8 Kbps or 405.6 K bytes/sec" And a short while ago, downloaded a 23MB mp3 from a server in New York at a steady 250KBps, so at least in Upper Hutt things are hunky dory. |
