450444 2006-05-03 03:37:00 And did anybody notice that there are no Aucklanders in this thread slagging off other cities and towns in NZ. What does that tell you about our tolerance and Kiwi spirit?

Interesting isn't it?

Cheers

Perhaps it's because they are too embarrased to open their mouths in self defence.

Might I suggest Billy, that you devote your time to editing "Monday's Laughs"
And let us finish letting Jata's know what the rest of the country thinks of them :D

450445 2006-05-03 04:28:00 OK, I'm a Jafa . . . not an ex-jafa or wannabe-jafa and I can think of no reason to defend Auckland or Aucklanders off the top of my round orange head, but but I've come against what I fondly call 'redneck racists' .

A year or two back I went for a trip down the South Island and was at a tourist bungy jump place across a gorge in the middle of the wopps waiting my turn to have my stomach pushed through my nostrils .

Was at the trendy looking espresso coffee stand chatting to the woman working there and yep- she asked me where I came from, to which I replied "Auckland" and she turned around and ignored me . . . blunt as that .

Similar stories around the South island until I decided to tell anyone who asked that I came from Gt Barrier . . . most thought I was from Aussie and all was sweet .

I must say the reception in Wangas was better . . . everyone just assumed I was a bastard wherever I came from :D

450446 2006-05-03 06:59:00 Auckland is the largest market for what exactly? All that junk we import from China?
Ummmm.........Let's start with food, and other necessities of daily life, plus whatever the stuff is that rolls up SH1 by day and by night, then there's building materials. If you are a primary or secondary producer in NZ (as opposed to an importer, but they get their share as well) your biggest market may well be in Auckland.

Anyway, I think I'll take Jack's advice and bow out of the thread. I'm not one for intolerance, prejudice, or "just because it's not where I live" arguments. Turf disputes are a waste of time and energy, we should respect our fellow countryment and not slag them for their accident of birth location or choice of city for work. Those attitudes and behaviour diminish all of us. :(

Oh yes, and I still think the carpark was a first class investment, and if I ever get a similar opportunity I'll be in like a randy dog, either that or spend the money buying all the spare carparks in Wanganui or Invercargill. :D

Cheers

450448 2006-05-03 09:04:00 Billy, those people would still eat food, defecate, build houses and do most of the tings they do in Auckland where ever they resided in NZ .

Of course there are advantages in having larger population centres, economies of scale, etc, but it does not preclude that the larger the centre auotmatically makes it superior in some way or should get a larger slice of resources (the latter should be less on economies of scale, some would argue) .

The fact of the matter is, that a good junk of the 3/4 of the population in NZ is either abivalent to Auckland or downright peeved that ther "appear" to get more attention than the rest put together by dint of being Auckland, see jobs disappear at the expense of their area and lifestyle, constantly have to wait for orders or deal with remote businesses to be serviced .

Call it jelousy if you like, and in many cases that's all it is, but there is a case for reigning Auckland in, for getting some balance back and treating the reat of the country that it exists other than as a business opportunity or primary supplier . Putting the lid on Auckland would have big benefits for the existing locals and their environment as well IMO .

450449 2006-05-03 09:24:00 Billy, please don't be offended. As Murray has pointed out there are some valid questions asked by New Zealanders who live outside the Auckland area.

That doesn't mean that Auckland people are bad or wrong or anything else. The rest of us just are rather tired of hearing about Aucklands woes and needs in newspapers, on the radio, and television. And I have to say, we're a bit testy about paying for it.

Logically if the roads are full, employers will move to a city or town where services are cheaper, easier, and more reliable. People will follow the jobs.

Instead the bulk of the community are taxed to make it easier for a quarter of their number to move around so they can stay in the one spot. There isn't any social justice or economic sense for this.

450450 2006-05-03 09:40:00 What a pity superior Aucklanders won't spend their money on building a few roads and putting up another bridge. They'rd rather spend ridiculous sums on a place to park their cars.
Some of the oldies will remember all the arguements when the harbour bridge was mooted. "Don't need it". "The ferries will shift all the cars that want to cross the harbour."
Then when the bridge was completed, I remember someone making a speech about not needing to worry about roads for "another hundred years".

Seems to me Aucklanders are still thinking in those terms.

450451 2006-05-03 10:16:00 Billy, please don't be offended . As I said, I'm out of this thread now, but I'm not offended at all . I can live with reasoned argument, but I am deeply saddened when fellow New Zealanders make offensive comments about their brethren, many of whom had no say in where they were born and raised . They live here, as I do, because Auckland is home, not because it is supposedly better than any other place . We are not blind to its flaws, but we pull our weight as well as any other community in NZ .

Now here is my last word on the subject, definitely, positively and for sure:

Live and let live .

Cheers

450452 2006-05-03 11:21:00 I think the "last word" should be that Auckland is plainly and simply close to being the world's finest city. (this coming from someone who was born Wellingtonian) Greg (193)
450453 2006-05-03 11:42:00 Perhaps thie thread ought to be locked since the arguments are just going in an infinite loop bob_doe_nz (92)
