I would suggest talking to Mrs GF b4 going any further with that line of thinking.

450505 2006-05-01 03:29:00 Specialty dishes.. Spaghetti Bolognaise or Steak (medium rare) with jacket potatoes

I'm a throw together cook, if its in the cupboard it usually goes in.

Like the meat from my spag bolognaise.. Brown the mince, sprinkle in some soy sauce, throw in pasta sauce, then mixed veges. Throw in sachet (Maggi I think; Italian mince) and cook medium a while (adding water if its drying out). For anyone who doesnt like food too spicy, serve now. Otherwise, sprinkle in garlic granules, add sweet chilli sauce, cook a short while longer and then serve.

Jacket potatoes (I cheat and use microwave, just stab potatoes first otherwise they will explode). Anyway, cook potatoes in microwave, take out and cut down middle then cut actross 3 times. Fill in with cheese and a sprinkle of cajun seasoning.. nuke for minute (till cheese melts). Lightly drizzle with tomatoe sauce .. ideal companion for medium rare steak (incidentally steak is fried with garlic-pepper seasoning on both sides).

Both are quick, easy (dunno about nutritious but they taste good :D)

450506 2006-05-01 04:58:00 On the rare occasions when I cook a roast, the meal is spoiled by the effort of preparation and cooking and cleaning up. No wonder cooking is a woman's job. No man would put up with it, if he could avoid it!.

So what makes you think that women enjoy cooking and cleaning?? I most certainly do not !! I only do it because I have to and refuse to go into full-time work as well as be the house cleaner/cook/etc.

A few years ago the other half made the mistake of whining about how we didn't have as many roasts and certain other meals as much as we used to. My reply was that I was sick to death of all the darn cleaning up afterwards and how I hated cleaning the oven. He offered to either do the cooking or the cleaning up and clean the oven in return for more of what he wanted so now we have a reasonably happy compromise.

I say "reasonably" because with me being a perfectionist his standard of cleaning doesn't come quite as close to mine so I have had to very reluctantly lower my standards a fair bit to accept it.

450507 2006-05-01 05:22:00 Hold back on the gravy until the oven is up to standard .

We do need domestic training . It doesn't come naturally . We're meant to be out blowing up mountains and rampagtig through boardrooms and skewering the oppostion - take us a while to get over it . :D

But there's the rub I agree . Why should women be considered the 'natural' ones to do it now we can all have financial independence?

Some would leap in and say "machinery! that's the amswer . " Yeah right who cleans the machines?

Funny thing I saw on TV once this guy's wife had just left him and he was going for custody of the kids and the judge asks if he can cook and the guy replies . "We have recipe books, a kitchen and pots and plans . I don't see that being an issue . "

Oooooh . Bad . You shouldn't do that . Nothing worse than being hassled about not having done it "properly" . As he is the one cleaning it, if he leaves bits, the next time it will be worse, and the time after that . He'll get the idea after a few cleans . Or even better he'll chuck it and buy you a nice shiny clean new one . And then be obsessive about cleaning it .

For a while anyway . . . . . . . . . . .

450509 2006-05-01 07:07:00 OK OK what's wrong with being "clean enough"? Not as if we're going to conduct surgery in it. In my exp women are fussier/more demanding/ have higher standards/whichever but plenty of us failed X chromosomes manage to cook and eat and wash for ourselves and not die of some 'lack of hygiene' disease every week. Some of you are just over the top about it, might even be a 'queen of the kitchen' power trip thing. :) (smiley to indicate non-antagonism, well not mischeviously anyway) :D mark c (247)

450511 2006-05-01 08:55:00 Tonight, I had macaroni cheese made with pasta bow ties, a rich cheese sauce, bacon, onions, some mixed veges.

And served with a lightly thickened soup made from ginger, pork meat, shi-ttake mushrooms, beaten egg and chinese melon.

Simple, yet satisfying

450513 2006-05-03 04:09:00 Very good Greg, I presume you did them.

made me guilty now, I should be doing more pickles myself. Garden went to chaos when I was busy over summer. now getting it back to order. I think a garden is one of the essentials of good food. :)
