450404 2006-05-01 07:36:00 Nah you're misguided mate..

Meh, I lived there for a couple of years, Its a terrible place. Hopefully the trend of the population spreading out into other centres continues, our economies can all do with some balance.

Though I can see the trend growing as more and more peoiple get fed up with the sub-par housing and traffic congestion.

Wanganui is a paradise in comparison.

450405 2006-05-01 07:59:00 Great beaches, Maybe. But how do you get to them? Spend hours in traffic, and when you get there hoons running wild with there bottles of beer annoying everyone. Crowds everywhere. Nowhere to go for a quiet beer. I remember about fourty years ago when a new pub was opened in New Lynn. The locals where happy with if for about a week. Then they renamed it ,"The Flying Jug" and left it to the hoons.
I have not lived in Auckland for fourty years. In fact I've only been up there about three time in the past thirty five years.
The first thing I noticed when I was last there is that there are no trees.Just bare dirty streets. And from what I read, if a tree does try to grow there the council rushes in and cuts it down. Most in need of repair. And if you go anywhere up there ,there's nowhere to park when you get there.
At least there's still plenty of small towns with tree lined streets with no traffic jams.
I will never ever see Auckland again. And that doesn't worry me in the least.

I was in Rotorua a couple of weeks ago and all I can say is : "Are you sure those fumes haven't got to you?" Which suburb(s) are you referring to? Or have you been watching Shortland Street too much? (Ah that must be where some of the posters in their thread gets their views on Auckland). To describe Auckland with such sweeping generalisations is, in one word, incorrect.

Auckland is a city of contrast. Some areas are nice, others aren't. Some beaches are beautiful, others aren't. Some areas have trees, others don't (aka the motorway). Some people are rich, lots aren't. Sometimes there are hoons (i.e. Mission Bay on Guy Fawkes night) but most nights not. Some people pay $78000 for a carpark, most don't. Plenty of crowded pubs for a noisy beer, and plenty of empty pubs & RSAs for a quiet beer.

And contrary to your opinion the various city councils do care about the environment and they prevent residents & developers from cutting down trees. So if you could enlighten me as to your source regarding 'cutting down trees' I would be happy to be corrected. Plenty of tree lined streets, and plenty of no-tree streets. Some parts of Auckland have a genuine community feel, others do not. And there are plenty of carparks, that don't cost 78 grand, if you know where to look!

Cheers,
A

450407 2006-05-01 08:21:00 On the topic of trees, I must say, as someone indirectly involved in decision making with one of the council, we are not simply 'cutting down'. Yes, we cut down trees right next to motorways so that we can widen the roads, but we do also plant new ones in. I don't mean seeds, I mean actual trees. We don't just replace them as they are cut, we add in an extra one for every tree cut. Another words, one is replaced with two. I don't understand how that is considered 'cutting down'. techie (7177)
450408 2006-05-01 08:21:00 Auckland can only be regarded as the world's favourite city..if I had to live anywhere in the world it would be Napier,
Hi Greg - if you had read the Herald about two weeks ago you would have seen that Auckland is rated worldwide as the fifth best city to live in. Vancouver used to be the top city, but from memory dropped to third or fourth. Wellington did well too and is regarded about twelfth (but someone may well correct me !).

Anyway we do concur with you, Mrs Misty and I have a great love of Napier (especially being Art Deco fans) and if we ever did leave Auckland it would probably be our first choice (Nelson pretty close also).
Misty

450409 2006-05-01 08:25:00 Contrast?

Its a faceless congested mess, even compared to other bigger cities its a poor excuse.

Don't take me wrong, I dont buy into the whole Jafa carry on, but as far as places to live....60 minutes in any direction and you have improved your souroundings and quality of life ten fold.

Of course, i may just be an ignorant hick from the back blocks, Im sure a couple million people croweded into an expanse of tarseal, concrete, air and noise pollution is just paradise to those in the know....

450410 2006-05-01 08:29:00 TY techie, nice to hear from a source. I beleive many councils have good enviromental protocols, scope for improvement of course and many opposing people may squeal but I for one am pleased with this 'greening' of officialdom...........m

trees, oxygen, mmmmmmmmmm

Hi Mark
You mentioned that it used to cost you $20/week to bus in and out of town for a week. I can confirm that nowadays it costs $30 which is not bad value when compared to the cost of running and parking a car. I agree our public transport system leaves a lot to be desired but I have chosen to use it semi-regularly for the past 5-6 weeks and it's not that bad.
